Buthegavehismindtotheseunwontedthemes,andlaboredhardtobeentertaining;fornowthathehadgainedthevantage-groundhesought,hewasdeterminedtodiscoverwhethertherewasasleepingmindoravacuumbehindMissMayhew\'sshapelyforehead.Grantingthattherewasawomanlyintelligencethere,asyetunquickened,hewasnotsoirrationalastoimaginehecouldjostleitintoilluminingactivityinoneshorthour,orday,orweek.Butitseemedtohimthatifanymindexistedworththename,itwouldgivesuchencouragingsignsoflifebeforemanydayspassedaswouldpromisesuccessofhisexperiment.Hefeltthathisfirstaimmustbetoestablishanintimacythatwouldpermitasfullandfrankanexchangeofthoughtaswaspossiblebetweenpeoplesodissimilar. Sheresentedthisdisapproval,andatthesametimerespectedhimforit.Indeedhepuzzledher.Heevidentlysoughtandwishedforhersociety;andyetastheywalkedbackandforth,eventhoughshedidnotlookathimwhenthelightgavehertheopportunitytodoso,shefeltintuitivelythathedidnotenjoyhercompany. Shesawthathewaslaboringhardtomakehimselfagreeable;buthissmalltalkhadnotthefamiliarflippancyandfluencyofonespeakinginhisnativetongue;norwashismannerthatofonewho,infatuatedwithherbeauty,hadthrownasideallotherconsiderations. Shefeltthatthemanathersidemeasuredher,andunderstoodherlittlenessthoroughly.
