Hemusedonherletterstohim,inwhichshehadnevermentionedasyllableconcerningKnight。Itisdesirable,however,toobservethatonlyintwoletterscouldshepossiblyhavedoneso。OnewaswrittenaboutaweekbeforeKnight\'sarrival,when,thoughshedidnotmentionhispromisedcomingtoStephen,shehadhardlyadefinitereasoninhermindforneglectingtodoit。InthenextshedidcasuallyalludetoKnight。ButStephenhadleftBombaylongbeforethatletterarrived。 Stephenlookedattheblackformoftheadjacenthouse,whereitcutadarkpolygonalnotchoutofthesky,andfeltthathehatedthespot。Hedidnotknowmanyfactsofthecase,butcouldnothelpinstinctivelyassociatingElfride\'sficklenesswiththemarriageofherfather,andtheirintroductiontoLondonsociety。
