greensnakelivedwithusseveralweeks，concealinghimselfbehindthecasingofthedeckhouseinthedaytime。Tobearousedinthedarkbyfivefeetofcoldgreensnakeglidingoverone\'sfaceisratherunpleasant，howeverrapidthemovementmaybe。Myriadsoftwovarietiesofcockroachesinfestedthevessel；theynotonlyateroundtherootsofournails，butevendevouredanddefiledourfood，flannels，andboots。Vainwerealloureffortstoextirpatethesedestructivepests；ifyoukillone，saythesailors，ahundredcomedowntohisfuneral!IntheworkofCommodoreOwenitisstatedthatcockroaches，poundedintoapaste，formapowerfulcarminative；thishasnotbeenconfirmed，butwhenmonkeysarefedonthemtheyaresuretobecomelean。
OncomingtoSenna，wefoundthattheZulushadarrivedinforcefortheirannualtribute。Thesemenareundergooddiscipline，andneverstealfromthepeople。Thetaxisclaimedonthegroundofconquest，theZulushavingformerlycompletelyovercometheSennapeople，andchasedthemontotheislandsintheZambesi。Fifty-fourofthePortuguesewereslainontheoccasion，and，notwithstandingthemudfort，thevillagehasneverrecovereditsformerpower。Feverwasnowveryprevalent，andmostofthePortugueseweredownwithit。
Foragoodviewoftheadjacentscenery，thehill，Baramuana，behindthevillage，wasascended。Acautionwasgivenabouttheprobabilityofanattackoffeverfromaplantthatgrowsnearthesummit。Dr。
KirkdiscoveredittobethePaedeviafoetida，which，whensmelt，actuallydoesgiveheadacheandfever。Ithasanastyfetor，asitsnameindicates。Thisisoneinstanceinwhichfeverandafoulsmellcoincide。Inanumberofinstancesoffensiveeffluviaandfeverseemstohavenoconnection。Owingtotheabundantrains，thecropsintheSennadistrictwereplentiful；thiswasfortunate，afterthepartialfailureofthepasttwoyears。Itwasthe25thofApril，1860，beforewereachedTette；herealsothecropswereluxuriant，andthepeoplesaidthattheyhadnothadsuchabundancesince1856，theyearwhenDr。Livingstonecamedowntheriver。Itisastonishingtoanyonewhohasseentheworksforirrigationinothercountries，asattheCapeandinEgypt，thatnoattempthaseverbeenmadetoleadoutthewatereitheroftheZambesioranyofitstributaries；

FeelinginhonourboundtoreturnwiththosewhohadbeenthefaithfulcompanionsofDr。Livingstone，in1856，andtowhoseguardianshipandserviceswasduetheaccomplishmentofajourneywhichallthePortugueseatTettehadpreviouslypronouncedimpossible，therequisitestepsweretakentoconveythemtotheirhomes。

Anumberofdayswerespentinbusypreparationforourjourney；thecloth，beads，andbrasswire，forthetripweresewnupinoldcanvas，andeachpackagehadthebearer\'snameprintedonit。TheMakololo，whohadworkedfortheExpedition，werepaidfortheirservices，andeveryonewhohadcomedownwiththeDoctorfromtheinteriorreceivedapresentofclothandornaments，inordertoprotectthemfromthegreatercoldoftheirowncountry，andtoshowthattheyhadnotcomeinvain。ThoughcalledMakololobycourtesy，astheywereproudofthename，Kanyata，theprincipalheadman，wastheonlyrealMakololooftheparty；andhe，invirtueofhisbirth，hadsucceededtothechiefplaceonthedeathofSekwebu。TheothersbelongedtotheconqueredtribesoftheBatoka，Bashubia，Ba-Selea，andBarotse。SomeofthesemenhadonlyaddedtotheirownvicesthoseoftheTetteslaves；others，bytoilingduringthefirsttwoyearsinnavigatingcanoes，andhuntingelephants，hadoftenmanagedtosavealittle，totakebacktotheirowncountry，buthadtopartwithitallforfoodtosupporttherestintimesofhunger，and，latterly，hadfallenintotheimprovidenthabitsofslaves，andspenttheirsurplusearningsinbeerandaguaardiente。
Everythingbeingreadyonthe15thofMay，westartedat2p。m。fromthevillagewheretheMakololohaddwelt。Anumberofthemendidnotleavewiththegoodwillwhichtheirtalkformonthsbeforehadledustoanticipate；butsomeproceededuponbeingtoldthattheywerenotcompelledtogounlesstheyliked，thoughothersaltogetherdeclinedmoving。Manyhadtakenupwithslave-women，whomtheyassistedinhoeing，andinconsumingtheproduceoftheirgardens。

Amerchantsentthreeofhismenalongwithus，withapresentforSekeletu，andMajorSicardalsolentusthreemoretoassistusonourreturn，andtwoPortuguesegentlemankindlygaveustheloanofacoupleofdonkeys。WesleptfourmilesaboveTette，andhearingthattheBanyai，wholevyheavyfinesonthePortuguesetraders，livedchieflyontherightbank，wecrossedovertotheleft，aswecouldnotfullytrustourmen。IftheBanyaihadcomeinathreateningmanner，ourfollowersmight，perhaps，fromhavinghomesbehindthem，haveevenputdowntheirbundlesandrun。Indeed，twoofthematthispointmadeuptheirmindstogonofurther，andturnedbacktoTette。Another，Monga，aBatoka，wasmuchperplexed，andcouldnotmakeoutwhatcoursetopursue，ashehad，threeyearspreviously，woundedKanyata，theheadman，withaspear。ThisisacapitaloffenceamongtheMakololo，andhewasafraidofbeingputtodeathforitonhisreturn。Hetried，invain，toconsolehimselfwiththefactsthathehadneitherfather，mother，sisters，norbrotherstomournforhim，andthathecoulddiebutonce。Hewasgood，andwouldgouptothestarstoYesu，andthereforedidnotcarefordeath。Inspite，however，ofthesereflections，hewasmuchcastdown，untilKanyataassuredhimthathewouldnevermentionhismisdeedtothechief；indeed，hehadneverevenmentionedittotheDoctor，whichhewouldassuredlyhavedonehaditlainheavyonhisheart。WewererightgladofMonga\'scompany，forhewasamerrygood-temperedfellow，andhislithemanlyfigurehadalwaysbeeninthefrontindanger；and，frombeingleft-handed，hadbeeneasilyrecognizedinthefightwithelephants。

StoppingoneafternoonataKebrabasavillage，aman，whopretendedtobeabletochangehimselfintoalion，cametosaluteus。
Smellingthegunpowderfromagunwhichhadbeendischarged，hewentononesidetogetoutofthewindofthepiece，tremblinginamostartisticmanner，butquiteoveractinghispart。TheMakololoexplainedtousthathewasaPondoro，oramanwhocanchangehisformatwill，andaddedthathetrembleswhenhesmellsgunpowder。
\"Doyounotseehowheistremblingnow？\"Wetoldthemtoaskhimtochangehimselfatonceintoalion，andwewouldgivehimaclothfortheperformance。\"Ohno，\"repliedthey；\"ifwetellhimso，hemaychangehimselfandcomewhenweareasleepandkillus。”Havingsimilarsuperstitionsathome，theyreadilybecameasfirmbelieversinthePondoroasthenativesofthevillage。Weweretoldthatheassumestheformofalionandremainsinthewoodsfordays，andissometimesabsentforawholemonth。Hisconsideratewifehadbuilthimahutorden，inwhichsheplacesfoodandbeerforhertransformedlord，whosemetamorphosisdoesnotimpairhishumanappetite。
NooneeverentersthishutexceptthePondoroandhiswife，andnostrangerisallowedeventoresthisgunagainstthebaobab-treebesideit:theMfumo，orpettychief，ofanothersmallvillagewishedtofineourmenforplacingtheirmusketsagainstanoldtumble-downhut，itbeingthatofthePondoro。AttimesthePondoroemployshisacquiredpowersinhuntingforthebenefitofthevillage；andafteranabsenceofadayortwo，hiswifesmellsthelion，takesacertainmedicine，placesitintheforest，andtherequicklyleavesit，lestthelionshouldkillevenher。ThismedicineenablesthePondorotochangehimselfbackintoaman，returntothevillage，andsay，\"GoandgetthegamethatIhavekilledforyou。”

Theyreturned，bearingastrophiesthetailandpartofthetrunk，andmarchedintocampaserectassoldiers，andevidentlyfeelingthattheirstaturehadincreasedconsiderablysincethemorning。
Sandia\'swifewasdulyinformedoftheirsuccess，asherealawdecreesthathalftheelephantbelongstothechiefonwhosegroundithasbeenkilled。ThePortuguesetradersalwayssubmittothistax，and，wereitofnativeorigin，itcouldhardlybeconsideredunjust。Achiefmusthavesomesourceofrevenue；and，asmanychiefscanraisenoneexceptfromivoryorslaves，thistaxismorefreefromobjectionsthananyotherthatablackChancelloroftheExchequercoulddevise。Itseems，however，tohaveoriginatedwiththePortuguesethemselves，andthentohavespreadamongtheadjacenttribes。TheGovernorslooksharplyafteranyelephantthatmaybeslainontheCrownlands，anddemandoneofthetusksfromtheirvassals。WedidnotfindthelawinoperationinanytribebeyondtherangeofPortuguesetraders，orfurtherthanthesphereoftravelofthoseArabswhoimitatedPortuguesecustomsintrade。AttheKafuein1855thechiefsboughtthemeatwekilled，anddemandednothingastheirdue；andsoitwasuptheShireduringourvisits。
TheslavesofthePortuguese，whoaresentbytheirmasterstoshootelephants，probablyconniveattheextensionofthislaw，fortheystrivetogetthegoodwillofthechiefstowhosecountrytheycome，byadvisingthemtomakeademandofhalfofeachelephantkilled，andforthisadvicetheyarewellpaidinbeer。WhenwefoundthatthePortuguesearguedinfavourofthislaw，wetoldthenativesthattheymightexacttusksfromTHEM，butthattheEnglish，beingdifferent，preferredthepurenativecustom。ItwasthiswhichmadeSandia，asafterwardsmentioned，hesitate；butwedidnotcaretoinsistonexemptioninourfavour，wheretheprevalenceofthecustommighthavebeenheldtojustifytheexaction。

Somejumpinside，androllaboutthereintheireagernesstoseizethepreciousfat，whileothersrunoff，screaming，withpiecesofthebloodymeat，throwitonthegrass，andrunbackformore:allkeeptalkingandshoutingattheutmostpitchoftheirvoices。Sometimestwoorthree，regardlessofalllaws，seizethesamepieceofmeat，andhaveabrieffightofwordsoverit。Occasionallyanagonizedyellburstsforth，andanativeemergesoutofthemovingmassofdeadelephantandwrigglinghumanity，withhishandbadlycutbythespearofhisexcitedfriendandneighbour:thisrequiresaragandsomesoothingwordstopreventbadblood。Inanincrediblyshorttimetonsofmeatarecutup，andplacedinseparateheapsaround。
Sandiaarrivedsoonafterthebeastwasdivided:heisanelderlyman，andwearsawigmadeof\"ife\"fibre(sanseviera)dyedblack，andofafineglossyappearance。Thisplantisalliedtothealoes，anditsthickfleshyleaves，inshapesomewhatlikeoursedges，whenbruisedyieldmuchfinestrongfibre，whichismadeintoropes，nets，andwigs。Ittakesdyesreadily，andthefibremightformagoodarticleofcommerce。\"Ife\"wigs，asweafterwardssaw，arenotuncommoninthiscountry，thoughperhapsnotsocommonashairwigsathome。Sandia\'smosamela，orsmallcarvedwoodenpillow，exactlyresemblingtheancientEgyptianone，washungfromthebackofhisneck；thispillowandasleepingmatareusuallycarriedbynativeswhenonhuntingexcursions。
Wehadtheelephant\'sfore-footcookedforourselves，innativefashion。Alargeholewasdugintheground，inwhichafirewasmade；and，whentheinsidewasthoroughlyheated，theentirefootwasplacedinit，andcoveredoverwiththehotashesandsoil；anotherfirewasmadeabovethewhole，andkeptburningallnight。Wehadthefootthuscookedforbreakfastnextmorning，andfounditdelicious。Itisawhitishmass，slightlygelatinous，andsweet，likemarrow。Alongmarch，topreventbiliousness，isawiseprecautionafteramealofelephant\'sfoot。Elephant\'strunkandtonguearealsogood，and，afterlongsimmering，muchresemblethehumpofabuffaloandthetongueofanox；butalltheothermeatistough，and，fromitspeculiarflavour，onlytobeeatenbyahungryman。Thequantitiesofmeatourmendevourisquiteastounding。
Theyboilasmuchastheirpotswillhold，andeattillitbecomesphysicallyimpossibleforthemtostowawayanymore。Anuproariousdancefollows，accompaniedwithstentoriansong；andassoonastheyhaveshakentheirfirstcoursedown，andwashedoffthesweatanddustoftheafterperformance，theygotoworktoroastmore:ashortsnatchofsleepsucceeds，andtheyareupandatitagain；allnightlongitisboilandeat，roastanddevour，withafewbriefinterludesofsleep。Likeothercarnivora，thesemencanendurehungerforamuchlongerperiodthanthemereporridge-eatingtribes。

Sandiagaveustwoguides；andonthe4thofJunewelefttheElephantvalley，takingawesterlycourse；and，aftercrossingafewridges，enteredtheChingerereorPaguruguruvalley，throughwhich，intherainyseason，runsthestreamletPajodze。Themountainsonourleft，betweenusandtheZambesi，ourguidestoldushavethesamenameasthevalley，butthatattheconfluenceofthePajodzeiscalledMorumbwa。WestrucktheriveratlessthanhalfamiletothenorthofthecataractMorumbwa。OnclimbingupthebaseofthismountainatPajodze，wefoundthatweweredistantonlythediameterofthemountainfromthecataract。Inmeasuringthecataractweformerlystoodonitssouthernflank；nowwewereperchedonitsnorthernflank，andatoncerecognizedtheonion-shapedmountain，herecalledZakavuma，whosesmoothconvexsurfaceoverlooksthebrokenwater。Itsbearingbycompasswasl80degreesfromthespottowhichwehadclimbed，and700or800yardsdistant。Wenow，fromthisstanding-point，therefore，completedourinspectionofallKebrabasa，andsawwhat，asawhole，wasneverbeforeseenbyEuropeanssofarasanyrecordsshow。
