AjourneytoKelpieIslandconsistedofaseriesofconsecutiveepisodesbyrail,bycoach,andbysteamboat。Theconsulwasalreadyfamiliarwiththem,asindeedweremostofthecivilizedworld,foritseemedthatallroadsatcertainseasonsledoutofandreturnedtoSt。Kentigernasapointinavastcirclewhereintravelersweresuretomeetoneanotheragain,comingorgoing,atcertaindepotsandcaravansarieswithmoreorlesssuperiorityorenvy。TouristsontheroadtothehistoriccragsofWateffacamesharplyuponothertouristsreturningfromthem,andglaredsuspiciouslyatthem,asiftowrestthedreadsecretfromtheirsouls——ascrutinywhichtheothersreturnedwithhalf-humorouspityorsuperiorcalm。
