IhadnocausetodreadtheBowStreetrunners,fornotoneofthemhadseenme;butIhadthestrongestpossiblereasonsfordistrustingameetingwithmyenemy,Screw。Hewouldcertainlybemadeuseofbytheofficersforthepurposeofidentifyingthecompanionswhomhehadbetrayed;andIhadthebestreasonsintheworldtobelievethathewouldratherassistinthetakingofmethaninthecaptureofalltherestofthecoininggangputtogether——thedoctorhimselfnotexcepted。Mypresentcostumewasofthedandysort——rathershabby,butgayincolorandoutrageousincut。Ihadnotaltereditforanartisan\'ssuitinthedoctor\'shouse,becauseIneverhadanyintentionofstayingthereadaylongerthanIcouldpossiblyhelp。TheaproninwhichIhadwrappedthewriting-deskwastheonlyapproachIhadmadetowardwearingthehonorableuniformoftheworkingman。

IhadnotthemostdistantnotionwhereIwaswhenIreachedtheHighStreet,andstoppedatTheGreenBullHotelandCoach-office。However,ImanagedtomentionmymodestwishestobeconveyedatonceinthedirectionofWales,withnomorethanabecomingconfusionofmanner。
TheanswerwasnotsoencouragingasIcouldhavewished。ThecoachtoShrewsburyhadleftanhourbefore,andtherewouldbenootherpublicconveyancerunninginmydirectionuntilthenextmorning。Findingmyselfthusobligedtoyieldtoadversecircumstances,Isubmittedresignedly,andbookedaplaceoutsidebythenextday\'scoach,inthenameoftheReverendJohnJones。

ThroughouttherestofthejourneyIobservedthestrictestcaution,andfortunesecondedmyefforts。ItwasdarkwhenwegottoShrewsbury。OnleavingthecoachIwasenabled,undercoverofthenight,tokeepasharpwatchontheproceedingsofScrewandhisBowStreetally。Theydidnotputupatthehotel,butwalkedawaytoapublichouse。There,myclericalcharacterobligedmetoleavethematthedoor。
