butnowthatthissteamboatisable,withasmallcrewandabushelorsoofcoal,totakeninekeel-boatsfartheruptheriverinonehourthanthirtymenandthirtymulescandoitintwo,itisbelievedthattheold-fashionedtowingindustryisonitsdeath-bed。AsecondsteamboatbeganworkintheNeckarthreemonthsafterthefirstonewasputinservice。[Figure4] Atnoonwesteppedashoreandboughtsomebottledbeerandgotsomechickenscooked,whiletheraftwaited; thenweimmediatelyputtoseaagain,andhadourdinnerwhilethebeerwascoldandthechickenshot。 ThereisnopleasanterplaceforsuchamealthanaraftthatisglidingdownthewindingNeckarpastgreenmeadowsandwoodedhills,andslumberingvillages,andcraggyheightsgracedwithcrumblingtowersandbattlements。 InoneplacewesawanicelydressedGermangentlemanwithoutanyspectacles。BeforeIcouldcometoanchorhehadgotunderway。Itwasagreatpity。Isowantedtomakeasketchofhim。Thecaptaincomfortedmeformyloss,however,bysayingthatthemanwaswithoutanydoubtafraudwhohadspectacles,butkepttheminhispocketinordertomakehimselfconspicuous。 TwomilesbelowHornbergcastleisacaveinalowcliff,whichthecaptainoftheraftsaidhadoncebeenoccupiedbyabeautifulheiressofHornberg——theLadyGertrude—— intheoldtimes。Itwassevenhundredyearsago。
