THELASTDAYS
AfterashortvisittoLondon,RichardreturnedtoNewYorkinFebruary,1916。DuringhisabsencehiswifeandHopehadoccupiedtheScribnercottageatMountKisco,abouttwomilesfromCrossroads。Heremybrotherfinishedhissecondbookonthewar,andwrotenumerousarticlesandlettersurgingtheimmediatenecessityforpreparednessinthiscountry。AstoRichard\'susefulnesstohiscountryatthistime,Iquoteinpartfromtwoappreciationswrittenaftermybrother\'sdeathbythetwomostprominentexponentsofpreparedness。

HewaswiththeadvancedpartyattheopeningofthefightatLasGuasiinas,andwasdistinguishedthroughoutthefightbycoolnessandgoodconduct。HealsoparticipatedinthebattleofSanJuanandthesiegeofSantiago,andasanobserverwasalwayswheredutycalledhim。Hewasadelightfulcompanion,cheerful,resourceful,andthoughtfuloftheinterestsandwishesofothers。Hisreportsofthegamewerevaluableandamongthebestandmostaccurate。

Hisheartwasfilledwithadesiretoservehiscountrytothebestofhisability。HisrecentexperienceinEuropepointedouttohimtheabsolutemadnessoflongerdisregardingtheneedofdoingthosethingswhichreasonablepreparednessdictates,thethingswhichcannotbeaccomplishedaftertroubleisuponus。Hehadinmindatthetimeofhisdeathaseriesofarticlestobewrittenespeciallytobuildupinterestinuniversalmilitarytrainingthroughconveyingtoourpeopleanunderstandingofwhatorganizationasitexiststo-daymeans,andhowvitallyimportantitisforourpeopletodointimeofpeacethosethingswhichmodernwardoesnotpermitdoneonceitisunderway。

AlthoughsufferingfromhisstrenuousexperiencesinFrance,andmoreparticularlyfromthoseinGreece,Richardcontinuedtoaccomplishhisusualenormousamountofwork,andduringtheseweekswrotehislastshortstory,\"TheDeserter。\"

Onthe21stofMarch,1916,RichardandhiswifeanddaughtermovedfromtheScribnercottagetoCrossroads,andafewdayslaterhewasattackedbytheillnessthatendedinhisdeathonApril11。Hehaddinedwithhiswifeandafterwardhadworkedonanarticleonpreparedness,writtensomelettersandtelegramsconcerningthesamesubjectand,whilerepeatingoneofthelatteroverthetelephone,wasstricken。
Withinaweekofhisfifty-thirdyear,justoneyearfromthedayhehadfirstbroughthisbabydaughtertoherrealhome,doingthebestandfinestworkofhiscareerinthecauseoftheAlliesandpreparedness,quiteunconsciousthattheendwasnear,heleftus。Inthosefifty-twoyearshehadcrowdedthework,thepleasures,thekind,chivalrousdeedsofmanymen,andhediedjustasIamsurehewouldhavewishedtodie,workingintothenightforagreatcause,andalthoughillandtired,stillfretfulforthemorningthathemightagaintakeupthefight。
