Inevermetanybodypersonallyconcernedinthisaffair,theinterestofwhichforuswas,ofcourse,notthebadweatherbuttheextraordinarycomplicationbroughtintotheship\'slifeatamomentofexceptionalstressbythehumanelementbelowherdeck。 Neitherwasthestoryitselfeverenlargeduponinmyhearing。Inthatcompanyeachofuscouldimagineeasilywhatthewholethingwaslike。Thefinancialdifficultyofit,presentingalsoahumanproblem,wassolvedbyamindmuchtoosimpletobeperplexedbyanythingintheworldexceptmen\'sidletalkforwhichitwasnotadapted。 Atitsfirstappearance\"Typhoon,\"thestory,wasclassedbysomecriticsasadeliberatelyintendedstorm-piece。OtherspickedoutMacWhirr,inwhomtheyperceivedadefinitesymbolicintention。Neitherwasexclusivelymyintention。BoththetyphoonandCaptainMacWhirrpresentedthemselvestomeasthenecessitiesofthedeepconvictionwithwhichIapproachedthesubjectofthestory。Itwastheiropportunity。Itwasalsomyopportunity;anditwouldbevaintodiscourseaboutwhatImadeofitinahandfulofpages,sincethepagesthemselvesarehere,betweenthecoversofthisvolume,tospeakforthemselves。
