NewYorkpublishesit，criticisesit，andcirculatesit，butIdoubtifNewYorksocietymuchreadsitorcaresforit，andNewYorkisthereforebynomeanstheliterarycentrethatBostononcewas，thoughalargenumberofourliterarymenliveinoraboutNewYork.Boston，inmytimeatleast，haddistinctlyaliteraryatmosphere，whichmoreorlesspervadedsociety;butNewYorkhasdistinctlynothingofthekind，inanypervasivesense.Itisavastmart，andliteratureisoneofthethingsmarketedhere;butourgoodsocietycaresnomoreforitthanforsomeotherproductsboughtandsoldhere;itdoesnotcarenearlysomuchforbooksasforhorsesorforstocks，andIsupposeitisnotunlikethegoodsocietyofanyothermetropolisinthis.Tothegeneral，here，journalismisafarmoreappreciablethingthanliterature，andhasgreaterrecognition，forsomeverygoodreasons;butinBostonliteraturehadvastlymorehonor，andevenmorepopularrecognition，thanjournalism.Therejournalismdesiredtobeliterary，andhereliteraturehastotryhardnottobejournalistic.IfNewYorkisaliterarycentreonthebusinessside，asLondonis，Bostonwasaliterarycentre，asWeimarwas，andasEdinburghwas.Itfeltliterature，asthosecapitalsfeltit，andifitdidnotloveitquitesomuchasmightseem，italwaysrespectedit.
TobequiteclearinwhatIwishtosayofthepresentrelationofBostontoourotherliterarycentres，ImustrepeatthatwehavenownosuchliterarycentreasBostonwas.Bostonitselfhasperhapsoutgrowntheliteraryconsciousnesswhichformerlydistinguisheditfromallourotherlargetowns.Inaplaceofnearlyamillionpeople（Icountintheoutlyingplaces）newspapersmustbemorethanbooks;andthatalonesayseverything.
