Thewindowshadjustbeencarefullysecuredbystancheonsofiron,crossingeachotherathwartandend—long,likethegratesofaprison。Thedoorofthecourt—yardwasshut;anditwasonlyaftercautiouschallengethatoneofitsleaveswasopenedbytwodomestics,bothstrongHighlanders,andbothunderarms,likeBitiasandPandarusintheAEneid,readytodefendtheentranceifaughthostilehadventuredanintrusion。
