Aprotectingbartizanortwo,withtheadditionofsmallturretsattheangles,muchresemblingpepper—boxes,hadprocuredforDarnlinvarachthedignifiedappellationofacastle。Itwassurroundedbyalowcourt—yardwall,withinwhichweretheusualoffices。
Asthetravellersapproachedmorenearly,theydiscoveredmarksofrecentadditionstothedefencesoftheplace,whichhadbeensuggested,doubtless,bytheinsecurityofthosetroublesometimes。Additionalloop—holesformusketrywerestruckoutindifferentpartsofthebuilding,andofitssurroundingwall。
Thewindowshadjustbeencarefullysecuredbystancheonsofiron,crossingeachotherathwartandend—long,likethegratesofaprison。Thedoorofthecourt—yardwasshut;anditwasonlyaftercautiouschallengethatoneofitsleaveswasopenedbytwodomestics,bothstrongHighlanders,andbothunderarms,likeBitiasandPandarusintheAEneid,readytodefendtheentranceifaughthostilehadventuredanintrusion。
Whenthetravellerswereadmittedintothecourt,theyfoundadditionalpreparationsfordefence。Thewallswerescaffoldedfortheuseoffire—arms,andoneortwoofthesmallguns,calledsackers,orfalcons,weremountedattheanglesandflankingturrets。

Twentyorthirtytargets,asmanyclaymores,withdirks,andplaids,andguns,bothmatch—lockandfire—lock,andlong—bows,andcross—bows,andLochaberaxes,andcoatsofplatearmour,andsteelbonnets,andheadpieces,andthemoreancienthaborgeons,orshirtsofreticulatedmail,withhoodandsleevescorrespondingtoit,allhunginconfusionaboutthewalls,andwouldhaveformedamonth\'samusementtoamemberofamodernantiquariansociety。Butsuchthingsweretoofamiliar,toattractmuchobservationonthepartofthepresentspectators。
Therewasalargeclumsyoakentable,whichthehastyhospitalityofthedomesticwhohadbeforespoken,immediatelyspreadwithmilk,butter,goat—milkcheese,aflagonofbeer,andaflaskofusquebae,designedfortherefreshmentofLordMenteith;whileaninferiorservantmadesimilarpreparationsatthebottomofthetableforthebenefitofhisattendants。Thespacewhichintervenedbetweenthemwas,accordingtothemannersofthetimes,sufficientdistinctionbetweenmasterandservant,eventhoughtheformerwas,asinthepresentinstance,ofhighrank。
