ThegallantRitt—masterwouldwillinglyhaveemployedhisleisureinstudyingtheexteriorofSirDuncan\'scastle,andverifyinghisownmilitaryideasuponthenatureofitsdefences。Butastoutsentinel,whomountedguardwithaLochaber—axeatthedoorofhisapartment,gavehimtounderstand,byverysignificantsigns,thathewasinasortofhonourablecaptivity。 SirDuncanpresentedhismilitaryguesttohislady,whoreceivedhistechnicalsalutationwithastiffandsilentreverence,inwhichitcouldscarcebejudgedwhetherprideormelancholyhadthegreatershare。Thechurchman,towhomhewasnextpresented,eyedhimwithaglanceofmingleddislikeandcuriosity。
