ThenewPharaohorderedamemorialofsomeimportantpersonageorevent。Inthefirstplace,amightystonewasdislodgedfromitsconnections,andlifted,unbroken,fromthequarry。Thiswasafeatfromwhichourmodernstone—workersshrinkdismayed。TheEgyptiansappeartohavehandledthesehugemonolithsasourartisanshandlehearthstonesanddoorsteps,forthelandactuallybristledwithsuchgiantcolumns。TheywereshapedandfinishedasnicelyasiftheywerebreastpinsfortheTitanstowear,andontheirpolishedsurfaceswereengravedinimperishablecharacterstherecordstheywereerectedtopreserve。
