ThematerialtracesofthefirstAmericannobleman\'sexistencehavenearlydisappeared。Thehouseisstillstanding,butthestatues,theminarets,thearches,andthememoryofthegreatLordTimothyDexterlivechieflyintradition,andintheworkwhichbebequeathedtoposterity,andofwhichIshallsayafewwords。Itisunquestionablyathoroughlyoriginalproduction,andIfearthatsomereadersmaythinkIamtriflingwiththemwhenIamquotingitliterally。IamgoingtomakeastrongclaimforLordTimothyasagainstothercandidatesforacertainelevatedposition。 ThomasJeffersoniscommonlyrecognizedasthefirsttoproclaimbeforetheworldthepoliticalindependenceofAmerica。Itisnotsogenerallyagreeduponastowhowasthefirsttoannouncetheliteraryemancipationofourcountry。 OneofMr。Emerson\'sbiographershasclaimedthathisPhiBetaKappaOrationwasourDeclarationofLiteraryIndependence。ButMr。
