Ingeneral,however,itmaybearguedthatgreattransactionsandcomplicatedconcernsaskmoregeniustoconductthemthansmallerones,forthisreason,viz。thatthemindmustbeableeithertoembraceagreatervarietyofdetailsinamoreextensiverangeofobjects,ormusthaveagreaterfacultyofgeneralising,oragreaterdepthofinsightintorulingprinciples,andsocomeattrueresultsinthatway。 Buonapartekneweverything,eventothenamesofourcadetsintheEastIndiaservice;buthefailedinthis,thathedidnotcalculatetheresistancewhichbarbarismmakestorefinement。HethoughtthattheRussianscouldnotburnMoscow,becausetheParisianscouldnotburnParis。TheFrenchthinkeverythingmustbeFrench。TheCossacks,alas! donotconformtoetiquette:therudenessoftheseasonsknowsnorulesofpoliteness!Someartiststhinkitatestofgeniustopaintalargepicture;andIgrantthetruthofthisposition,ifthelargepicturecontainsmorethanasmallone。Itisnotthesizeofthecanvas,butthequantityoftruthandnatureputintoit,thatsettlesthepoint。 Itisamistake,commonenoughonthissubject,tosupposethataminiatureismorefinishedthananoil-picture。Theminiatureisinferiortotheoil-pictureonlybecauseitislessfinished,becauseitcannotfollownatureintosomanyindividualandexactparticulars。Theproofofwhichis,thatthecopyofagoodportraitwillalwaysmakeahighlyfinishedminiature(seeforexampleMr。Bone”senamels),whereasthecopyofagoodminiature,ifenlargedtothesizeoflife,willmakebutaverysorryportrait。Severalofourbestartists,whoarefondofpaintinglargefigures,invertthisreasoning。Theymakethewholefiguregigantic,notthattheymayhaveroomfornature,butforthemotionoftheirbrush(asiftheywerepaintingthesideofahouse),regardingtheextentofcanvastheyhavetocoverasanexcusefortheirslovenlyandhastymannerofgettingoverit;andthus,infact,leavetheirpicturesnothingatlastbutovergrownminiatures,buthugecaricatures。Itisnotnecessaryinanycase(eitherinalargerorasmallercompass)togointothedetails,soastolosesightoftheeffect,anddecompoundthefaceintoporousandtransparentmolecules,inthemannerofDenner,whopaintedwhathesawthroughamagnifying-glass。Thepainter”seyeneednotbeamicroscope,butI
