Theyhavenoothercluetoguidethemtotheirobjectbuteitherthedictatesoftheheartortheuniversallyunderstoodsentimentsofsociety,neitherofwhicharelikelytobeinthewrong。Theflamewhichburstsoutandblazesfrompopularsympathyismadeofhonestbuthomelymaterials。Itisnotkindledbysparksofwitorsophistry,nordampedbythecoldcalculationsofself-interest。Themultitudemaybewantonlysetonbyothers,asistoooftenthecase,orbecarriedtoofarintheimpulseofrageanddisappointment;buttheirresentment,whentheyarelefttothemselves,isalmostuniformly,inthefirstinstance,excitedbysomeevidentabuseandwrong;andtheexcessesintowhichtheyrunarisefromthatverywantofforesightandregularsystemwhichisapledgeoftheuprightnessandheartinessoftheirintentions。

Actorsbelongtothepublic:theirpersonsarenottheirownproperty。
