AfewweeksafterthebirthofLutherinaminer’scabininSaxony,UlricZwingliwasborninaherdsman’scottageamongtheAlps。Zwingli’ssurroundingsinchildhood,and172 hisearlytraining,weresuchastopreparehimforhisfuturemission。 Rearedamidscenesofnaturalgrandeur,beauty,andawfulsublimity,hismindwasearlyimpressedwithasenseofthegreatness,thepower,andthemajestyofGod。Thehistoryofthebravedeedsachieveduponhisnativemountainskindledhisyouthfulaspirations。AndatthesideofhispiousgrandmotherhelistenedtothefewpreciousBiblestorieswhichshehadgleanedfromamidthelegendsandtraditionsofthechurch。Witheagerinterestheheardofthegranddeedsofpatriarchsandprophets,oftheshepherdswhowatchedtheirflocksonthehillsofPalestinewhereangelstalkedwiththem,oftheBabeofBethlehemandtheManofCalvary。 LikeJohnLuther,Zwingli’sfatherdesiredaneducationforhisson,andtheboywasearlysentfromhisnativevalley。Hismindrapidlydeveloped,anditsoonbecameaquestionwheretofindteacherscompetenttoinstructhim。 AttheageofthirteenhewenttoBern,whichthenpossessedthemostdistinguishedschoolinSwitzerland。Here,however,adangerarosewhichthreatenedtoblightthepromiseofhislife。Determinedeffortswereputforthbythefriarstoallurehimintoamonastery。TheDominicanandFranciscanmonkswereinrivalryforpopularfavor。Thistheyendeavoredtosecurebytheshowyadornmentsoftheirchurches,thepompoftheirceremonials,andtheattractionsoffamousrelicsandmiracle-workingimages。 TheDominicansofBernsawthatiftheycouldwinthistalentedyoungscholar,theywouldsecurebothgainandhonor。Hisextremeyouth,hisnaturalabilityasaspeakerandwriter,andhisgeniusformusicandpoetry,wouldbemoreeffectivethanalltheirpompanddisplay,inattractingthepeopletotheirservicesandincreasingtherevenuesoftheirorder。BydeceitandflatterytheyendeavoredtoinduceZwinglitoentertheirconvent。Luther,whileastudentatschool,hadburiedhimselfinaconventcell,andhewouldhavebeenlosttotheworldhadnotGod’sprovidencereleasedhim。Zwingliwasnotpermittedtoencounterthe173
