TheRomanistsexulted,expectingtowitnessthespeedydownfalloftheReformation;andtheyblamedLuther,evenfortheerrorswhichhehadbeenmostearnestlyendeavoringtocorrect。Thefanaticalparty,byfalselyclaimingtohavebeentreatedwithgreatinjustice,succeededingainingthesympathiesofalargeclassofthepeople,and,asisoftenthecasewiththosewhotakethewrongside,theycametoberegardedasmartyrs。ThustheoneswhowereexertingeveryenergyinoppositiontotheReformationwerepitiedandlaudedasthevictimsofcrueltyandoppression。ThiswastheworkofSatan,promptedbythesamespiritofrebellionwhichwasfirstmanifestedinheaven。 FearlesslydidLutherdefendthegospelfromtheattackswhichcamefromeveryquarter。ThewordofGodproveditselfaweaponmightyineveryconflict。Withthatwordhewarredagainsttheusurpedauthorityofthepope,andtherationalisticphilosophyoftheschoolmen,whilehestoodfirmasarockagainstthefanaticismthatsoughttoallyitselfwiththeReformation。 EachoftheseopposingelementswasinitsownwaysettingasidetheHolyScripturesandexaltinghumanwisdomasthesourceofreligioustruthandknowledge。Rationalismidolizesreasonandmakesthisthecriterionforreligion。Romanism,claimingforhersovereignpontiffaninspirationdescendedinunbrokenlinefromtheapostles,andunchangeablethroughalltime,givesampleopportunityforeveryspeciesofextravaganceandcorruptiontobeconcealedunderthesanctityoftheapostoliccommission。
