Idonotsayawordagainstthiscreed。ItwasmadeupinTown,wherethereisnothingbutmachineryandasphaltandbuilding——allshutinbythefog。Naturally,amangrowstothinkthatthereisnoonehigherthanhimself,andthattheMetropolitanBoardofWorksmadeeverything。Butinthiscountry,whereyoureallyseehumanity——raw,brown,nakedhumanity——withnothingbetweenitandtheblazingsky,andonlytheused-up,over-handledearthunderfoot,thenotionsomehowdiesaway,andmostfolkcomebacktosimplertheories。Life,inIndia,isnotlongenoughtowasteinprovingthatthereisnooneinparticularattheheadofaffairs。 Janoo,withherhandsclasped,leaningforwardasshesatonthebed;Suddhoo,facedown,quivering,andtheseal-cutter。
