Theuseofearlylabourinself-imposedmechanicalemploymentsmay,beillustratedbytheboyhoodofSirIsaacNewton。Thougha,comparativelydullscholar,hewasveryassiduousintheuseofhis,saw,hammer,andhatchet-“knockingandhammeringinhislodging,room“-makingmodelsofwindmills,carriages,andmachinesofall,sorts;andashegrewolder,hetookdelightinmakinglittle,tablesandcupboardsforhisfriends。Smeaton,Watt,and,Stephenson,wereequallyhandywithtoolswhenmereboys;andbut,forsuchkindofself-cultureintheiryouth,itisdoubtful,whethertheywouldhaveaccomplishedsomuchintheirmanhood。
