bywhichAyeshaleftherfinger-marksuponherrival’shair。Therewassomethingsoterribleabouttheswift,snakelikemovement,andtheinstantaneousblanchingofthatthreefoldline,that,iftheresultstoUstanehadbeenmuchmoretremendous,Idoubtiftheywouldhaveimpressedmesodeeply。TothisdayIoftendreamofthatawfulscene,andseetheweepingwoman,bereaved,andmarkedlikeCain,castalastlookatherlover,andcreepfromthepresenceofherdreadqueen。 TodescribeourvisitwouldonlybetorepeatagreatdealofwhatIhavealreadysaid。Thetombsweenteredwereindeed。different,forthewholerockwasahoneycombofsepulchres,butthecontentswerenearlyalwayssimilar。Afterwardswevisitedthepyramidofbonesthathadhauntedmydreamsonthepreviousnight,andfromthencewentdownalongpassagetooneofthegreatvaultsoccupiedbythebodiesofthepoorercitizensofImperialKo^r。Thesebodieswerenotnearlysowellpreservedaswerethoseofthewealthierclasses。Manyofthemhadnolinencoveringonthem,alsotheywereburiedfromfivehundredtoonethousandinasinglelargevault,thecorpsesinsomeinstancesbeingthicklypiledoneuponanother,likeaheapofslain。 Afteraboutanhourofthisamusement,inthelatterpartofwhichJobdidnotparticipate,themutesbysignsindicatedthatBillaliwaswaitingforanaudience。Accordinglyhewastoldto“crawlup,“whichhedidasawkwardlyasusual,andannouncedthatthedancewasreadytobeginifSheandthewhitestrangerswouldbepleasedtoattend。Shortlyafterwardsweallrose,andAyeshahavingthrownadarkcloak(thesame,bytheway,thatshehadwornwhenIsawhercursingbythefire)overherwhitewrappings,westarted。Thedancewastobeheldintheopenair,onthesmoothrockyplateauinfrontofthegreatcave,andthitherwemadeourway。Aboutfifteenpacesfromthemouthofthecavewefoundthreechairsplaced,andherewesatandwaited,forasyetnodancersweretobeseen。Thenightwasalmost,butnotquite,dark,themoonnothavingrisenasyet,whichmadeuswonderhowweshouldbeabletoseethedancing。
