Upononeoccasionthebrothersfelloutaboutsomething,andChangknockedEngdown,andthentrippedandfellonhim,whereuponbothclinchedandbegantobeatandgougeeachotherwithoutmercy。Thebystandersinterfered,andtriedtoseparatethem,buttheycouldnotdoit,andsoallowedthemtofightitout。Intheendbothweredisabled,andwerecarriedtothehospitalononeandthesameshutter。 Theirancienthabitofgoingalwaystogetherhaditsdrawbackswhentheyreachedman’sestate,andenteredupontheluxuryofcourting。Bothfellinlovewiththesamegirl。Eachtriedtostealclandestineinterviewswithher,butatthecriticalmomenttheotherwouldalwaysturnup。 ThisunfortunatethinghasbeenagreatsorrowtoChang,foritalmostdestroyshisusefulnessinhisfavoritefieldofeffort。AssureasheistoheadagreattemperanceprocessionEngrangesupalongsideofhim,prompttotheminute,anddrunkasalord;butyetnomoredismallyandhopelesslydrunkthanhisbrother,whohasnottastedadrop。Andsothetwobegintohootandyell,andthrowmudandbricksattheGoodTemplars;and,ofcourse,theybreakuptheprocession。ItwouldbemanifestlywrongtopunishChangforwhatEngdoes,and,therefore,theGoodTemplarsaccepttheuntowardsituation,andsufferinsilenceandsorrow。Theyhaveofficiallyanddeliberatelyexaminedintothematter,andfindChangblameless。TheyhavetakenthetwobrothersandfilledChangfullofwarmwaterandsugarandEngfullofwhisky,andintwenty-
