CHAPTERXVII 20。Whohasgatheredthe”embitteredones”[579]intoasinglesociety?Fortheyallhavethesameend,whichistemporalandearthlyhappiness。Thisistheirmotivefordoingeverything,althoughtheymayfluctuatewithinaninnumerablediversityofconcerns。Whobutthee,OLord,gatheredthemtogether,thouwhosaidst,”Letthewatersbegatheredtogetherintooneplaceandletthedrylandappear”——athirstforthee?Fortheseaalsoisthine,andthoumadestit,andthyhandsformedthedryland。[580] Foritisnotthebitternessofmen’swillsbutthegatheringtogetherofthewaterswhichiscalled”thesea”;yetthoudostcurbthewickedlustsofmen’ssoulsandfixtheirbounds:howfartheyareallowedtoadvance,andwheretheirwaveswillbebrokenagainsteachother——andthusthoumakestit”asea,”bytheprovidenceofthygovernanceofallthings。 21。Butasforthesoulsthatthirstaftertheeandwhoappearbeforethee——separatedfrom”thesocietyofthe[bitter] sea”byreasonoftheirdifferentends——thouwaterestthembyasecretandsweetspring,sothat”theearth”maybringforthherfruitand——thou,OLord,commandingit——oursoulsmaybudforthinworksofmercyaftertheirkind。[581]Thusweshallloveourneighborinministeringtohisbodilyneeds,forinthiswaythesoulhasseedinitselfafteritskindwheninourowninfirmityourcompassionreachesouttothereliefoftheneedy,helpingthemevenaswewoulddesiretobehelpedourselvesifwewereinsimilarneed。Thuswehelp,notonlyineasyproblems(asissignifiedby”theherbyieldingitsseed”)butalsointheofferingofourbeststrengthinaffordingthemtheaidofprotection(suchas”thetreebearingitsfruit”)。Thisistosay,weseektorescuehimwhoissufferinginjuryfromthehandsofthepowerful——furnishinghimwiththeshelteringprotectionwhichcomesfromthestrongarmofarighteousjudgment。[582] CHAPTERXVIII 22。Thus,OLord,thusIbeseechthee:letithappenasthouhastpreparedit,asthougivestjoyandthecapacityforjoy。 Lettruthspringupoutoftheearth,andletrighteousnesslookdownfromheaven,[583]andlettherebelightsinthefirmament。[584] Letusbreakourbreadwiththehungry,letusbringtheshelterlesspoortoourhouse;letusclothethenaked,andneverdespisethoseofourownflesh。[585]Seefromthefruitswhichspringforthfromtheearthhowgooditis。Thusletourtemporallightbreakforth,andletusfromeventhislowerleveloffruitfulactioncometothejoyofcontemplationandholdonhightheWordofLife。Andletusatlengthappearlike”lightsintheworld,”[586]cleavingtothefirmamentofthyScripture。 Forinitthoumakestitplaintoushowwemaydistinguishbetweenthingsintelligibleandthingstangible,asifbetweenthedayandthenight——andtodistinguishbetweensoulswhogivethemselvestothingsofthemindandothersabsorbedinthingsofsense。Thusitisthatnowthouartnotaloneinthesecretofthyjudgmentasthouwastbeforethefirmamentwasmade,andbeforethoudidstdividebetweenthelightandthedarkness。Butnowalsothyspiritualchildren,placedandrankedinthissamefirmament——thygracebeingthusmanifestthroughouttheworld—— mayshedlightupontheearth,andmaydividebetweenthedayandnight,andmaybeforthesignsofthetimes[587];becauseoldthingshavepassedaway,and,lo,allthingsarebecomenew[588]; andbecauseoursalvationisnearerthanwhenwebelieved;andbecause”thenightisfarspentandthedayisathand”[589];andbecause”thoucrownesttheyearwithblessing,”[590]sendingthelaborersintothyharvest,inwhichothershavelaboredinthesowingandsendinglaborersalsotomakenewsowingswhoseharvestshallnotbeuntiltheendoftime。Thusthoudostgranttheprayersofhimwhoseeks,andthoudostblesstheyearsoftherighteousman。ButthouartalwaystheSelfsame,andinthyyearswhichfailnotthoupreparestagranaryforourtransientyears。 Forbyaneternaldesignthouspreadesttheheavenlyblessingsontheearthintheirproperseasons。 23。For”toonethereisgivenbythySpiritthewordofwisdom”[591](whichresemblesthegreaterlight——whichisforthosewhosedelightisintheclearlightoftruth——asthelightwhichisgivenfortherulingoftheday[592])。ButtoanotherthewordofknowledgeisgivenbythesameSpirit(asitwere,the”lesserlight”);toanother,faith;toanother,thegiftofhealing;toanother,thepowerofworkingmiracles;toanother,thegiftofprophecy;toanother,thediscerningofspirits;toanother,otherkindsoftongues——andallthesegiftsmaybecomparedto”thestars。”ForinthemalltheoneandselfsameSpiritisatwork,dividingtoeverymanhisownportion,asHewills,andmakingstarstoappearintheirbrightsplendorfortheprofitofsouls。Butthewordofknowledge,scientia,inwhichiscontainedallthemysteries[593]whichchangeintheirseasonslikethemoon;andalltheotherpromisesofgifts,whichwhencountedarelikethestars——allofthesefallshortofthatsplendorofWisdominwhichthedayrejoicesandareonlyfortherulingofthenight。Yettheyarenecessaryforthosetowhomthymostprudentservantcouldnotspeakastothespirituallymature,butonlyasiftocarnalmen——eventhoughhecouldspeakwisdomamongtheperfect。[594]Stillthenaturalman——asababeinChrist,andadrinkerofmilk,untilheisstrongenoughforsolidmeat,andhiseyeisabletolookintothesun——donotleavehiminalightlessnight。Instead,lethimbesatisfiedwiththelightofthemoonandthestars。Inthybookthoudostdiscussthesethingswithuswisely,ourGod——inthybook,whichisthy”firmament”——inorderthatwemaybeabletoviewallthingsinadmiringcontemplation,althoughthusfarwemustdosothroughsignsandseasonsandindaysandyears。 CHAPTERXIX 24。But,first,”washyourselvesandmakeyouclean;putawayiniquityfromyoursoulsandfrombeforemyeyes”[595]——sothat”thedryland”mayappear。”Learntodowell,judgethefatherless,pleadforthewidow,”[596]thattheearthmaybringforththegreenherbforfoodandfruit-bearingtrees。”Andcome,letusreasontogether,saiththeLord”[597]——thattheremaybelightsinthefirmamentofheavenandthattheymayshineupontheearth。 TherewasthatrichmanwhoaskedofthegoodTeacherwhatheshoulddotoattaineternallife。LetthegoodTeacher(whomtherichmanthoughtamanandnothingmore)givehimananswer——heisgoodforheisGod。Lethimanswerhimthat,ifhewouldenterintolife,hemustkeepthecommandments:lethimputawayfromhimselfthebitternessofmaliceandwickedness;lethimnotkill,norcommitadultery,norsteal,norbearfalsewitness[598]—— that”thedryland”mayappearandbringforththehonoringoffathersandmothersandtheloveofneighbor。”Allthese,”hereplied,”Ihavekept。”Wheredosomanythornscomefrom,iftheearthisreallyfruitful?uprootthebrierpatchofavarice;”sellwhatyouhave,andbefilledwithfruitbygivingtothepoor,andyoushallhavetreasureinheaven;andfollow”theLordifyouwouldbeperfectandjoinedwiththoseinwhosemidsthespeakethwisdom——whoknowhowtogiverightlytothedayandtothenight——andyouwillalsounderstand,sothatforyoualsotheremaybelightsinthefirmamentofheaven——whichwillnotbethere,however,unlessyourheartistherealso。Andyourheartwillnotbethereunlessyourtreasureisthere,[599]asyouhaveheardfromthegoodTeacher。But”thebarrenearth”[600]wasgrieved,andthebrierschokedtheword。[601] 25。Butyou,Oelectpeople,setinthefirmamentoftheworld,[602]whohaveforsakenallthatyoumayfollowtheLord: followhimnow,andconfoundthemighty!Followhim,Obeautifulfeet,[603]andshineinthefirmament,thattheheavensmaydeclarehisglory,dividingthelightoftheperfectones[604]—— thoughnotyetsoperfectastheangels——fromthedarknessofthelittleones——whoareneverthelessnotutterlydespised。 Shineoveralltheearth,andletthedaybelightedbythesun,uttertheWordofwisdomtotheday(”dayuntodayuttersspeech”[605])andletthenight,lightedbythemoon,displaytheWordofknowledgetothenight。Themoonandthestarsgivelightforthenight;thenightdoesnotputthemout,andtheyillumineinitspropermode。Forlo,itisasifGodweresaying,”Lettherebelightsinthefirmamentoftheheaven”:andsuddenlytherecameasoundfromheaven,asifitwerearushingmightywind,andthereappearedcloventonguesoffire,andtheysatoneachofthem。[606]Andthentheyweremadetobelightsinthefirmamentofheaven,havingtheWordoflife。Runtoandfroeverywhere,youholyfires,youlovelyfires,foryouarethelightoftheworldandyouarenottobehidunderapeckmeasure。[607]Hetowhomyoucleaveisraisedonhigh,andhehathraisedyouonhigh。Runtoandfro;makeyourselvesknownamongallthenations! CHAPTERXX 26。Alsolettheseaconceiveandbringforthyourworks,andletthewatersbearthemovingcreaturesthathavelife。[608] ForbyseparatingthepreciousfromthevileyouaremadethemouthofGod[609]bywhomhesaid,”Letthewatersbringforth。” Thisdoesnotrefertothelivingcreatureswhichtheearthbringsforth,buttothecreepingcreaturesthathavelifeandthefowlsthatflyovertheearth。For,bytheministryofthyholyones,thymysterieshavemadetheirwayamidthebuffetingbillowsoftheworld,toinstructthenationsinthyname,inthyBaptism。 Andamongthesethingsmanygreatandmarvelousworkshavebeenwrought,whichareanalogoustothehugewhales。Thewordsofthymessengershavegoneflyingovertheearth,highinthefirmamentofthyBookwhichisspreadoverthemastheauthoritybeneathwhichtheyaretoflywheresoevertheygo。For”thereisnospeechnorlanguagewheretheirvoiceisnotheard,”because”theirsoundhasgoneoutthroughalltheearth,andtheirwordstotheendoftheworld”[610]——andthisbecausethou,OLord,hastmultipliedthesethingsbythyblessing。 27。AmIspeakingfalsely?AmIminglingandconfoundingandnotrightlydistinguishingbetweentheknowledgeofthesethingsinthefirmamentofheavenandthosecorporealworksintheswellingseaandbeneaththefirmamentofheaven?Fortherearethosethings,theknowledgeofwhichissolidanddefined。Itdoesnotincreasefromgenerationtogenerationandthustheystand,asitwere,aslightsofwisdomandknowledge。Buttherearemanyandvariedphysicalprocessesthatmanifesttheseselfsameprinciples。Andthusonethinggrowingfromanotherismultipliedbythyblessing,OGod,whodostsorefreshoureasilyweariedmortalsensesthatinourmentalcognitionasinglethingmaybefiguredandsignifiedinmanydifferentwaysbydifferentbodilymotions。”Thewaters”havebroughtforththesemysteries,butonlyatthyword。Theneedsofthepeoplewhowerealientotheeternityofthytruthhavecalledthemforth,butonlyinthygospel,sinceitwasthese”waters”whichcastthemup——thewaterswhosestagnantbitternesswasthereasonwhytheycameforththroughthyWord。 28。Nowallthethingsthatthouhastmadearefair,andyet,lo,thouwhodidstmakeallthingsartinexpressiblyfairer。 AndifAdamhadnotfallenawayfromthee,thatbrackishsea—— thehumanrace——sodeeplyprying,soboisterouslyswelling,sorestlesslymoving,wouldneverhaveflowedforthfromhisbelly。 Thus,therewouldhavebeennoneedforthyministerstousecorporealandtangiblesignsinthemidstofmany”waters”inordertoshowforththeirmysticaldeedsandwords。ForthisisthewayIinterpretthephrases”creepingcreatures”and”flyingfowl。”Still,menwhohavebeeninstructedandinitiatedandmadedependentonthycorporealmysterieswouldnotbeabletoprofitfromthemifitwerenotthattheirsoulhasahigherlifeandunless,afterthewordofitsadmission,itdidnotlookbeyondtowarditsperfection。 CHAPTERXXI 29。Andthus,inthyWord,itwasnotthedepthoftheseabut”theearth,”[611]separatedfromthebrackishnessofthewater,thatbroughtforth,not”thecreepingandtheflyingcreaturethathaslife,”but”thelivingsoul”itself![612] Andnowthissoulnolongerhasneedofbaptism,astheheathenhad,orasitdidwhenitwascoveredwiththewaters—— andtherecanbenootherentranceintotheKingdomofHeaven,sincethouhastappointedthatbaptismshouldbetheentrance。 Nordoesitseekgreat,miraculousworksbywhichtobuttressfaith。Forsuchasouldoesnotrefusetobelieveunlessitseessignsandmarvels,nowthat”thefaithfulearth”isseparatedfrom”thewaters”ofthesea,whichhavebeenmadebitterbyinfidelity。Thus,forthem,”tonguesareforasign,nottothosewhobelievebuttothosewhodonotbelieve。”[613] Andtheearthwhichthouhastfoundedabovethewatersdoesnotstandinneedofthoseflyingcreatureswhichthewatersbroughtforthatthyword。Sendforththywordintoitbytheagencyofthymessengers。Forweonlytelloftheirworks,butitisthouwhodosttheworksinthem,sothattheymaybringforth”alivingsoul”intheearth。 Theearthbringsforth”thelivingsoul”because”theearth” isthecauseofsuchthingsbeingdonebythymessengers,justastheseawasthecauseoftheproductionofthecreepingcreatureshavinglifeandtheflyingfowlunderthefirmamentofheaven。”Theearth”nolongerneedsthem,althoughitfeedsontheFishwhichwastakenoutofthedeep,[614]setoutonthattablewhichthoupreparestinthepresenceofthosewhobelieve。Tothisendhewasraisedfromthedeep:thathemightfeed”thedryland。” And”thefowl,”eventhoughtheywerebredinthesea,willyetbemultipliedontheearth。Thepreachingofthefirstevangelistswascalledforthbyreasonofman’sinfidelity,butthefaithfulalsoareexhortedandblessedbytheminmanifoldways,daybyday。”Thelivingsoul”hasitsoriginfrom”theearth,”becauseonlytothefaithfulisthereanyprofitinrestrainingthemselvesfromtheloveofthisworld,sothattheirsoulmaylivetothee。 Thissoulwasdeadwhileitwaslivinginpleasures——inpleasuresthatbeardeathinthem——whereasthou,OLord,artthelivingdelightofthepureheart。 30。Now,therefore,letthyministersdotheirworkon”theearth”——notastheydidformerlyin”thewaters”ofinfidelity,whentheyhadtopreachandspeakbymiraclesandmysteriesandmysticalexpressions,inwhichignorance——themotherofwonder——givesthemanattentiveearbecauseofitsfearofoccultandstrangethings。ForthisistheentryintofaithforthesonsofAdamwhoareforgetfulofthee,whohidethemselvesfromthyface,andwhohavebecomeadarkenedabyss。Instead,letthyministersworkevenason”thedryland,”safefromthewhirlpoolsoftheabyss。Letthembeanexampleuntothefaithfulbylivingbeforethemandstirringthemuptoimitation。 Forinsuchasetting,menwillheed,notwiththemereintenttohear,butalsotoact。SeektheLordandyoursoulshalllive[615]and”theearth”maybringforth”thelivingsoul。” Benotconformedtothisworld;[616]separateyourselvesfromit。 Thesoullivesbyavoidingthosethingswhichbringdeathiftheyareloved。Restrainyourselvesfromtheunbridledwildnessofpride,fromtheindolentpassionsofluxury,andfromwhatisfalselycalledknowledge。[617]Thusmaythewildbeastbetamed,thecattlesubdued,andtheserpentmadeharmless。For,inallegory,thesefiguresarethemotionsofourmind:thatistosay,thehaughtinessofpride,thedelightoflust,andthepoisonofcuriosityaremotionsofthedeadsoul——notsodeadthatithaslostallmotion,butdeadbecauseithasdesertedthefountainoflife,andsohasbeentakenupbythistransitoryworldandconformedtoit。 31。ButthyWord,OGod,isafountainoflifeeternal,anditdoesnotpassaway。Therefore,thisdesertionisrestrainedbythyWordwhenitsaystous,”Benotconformedtothisworld,”totheendthat”theearth”maybringfortha”livingsoul”inthefountainoflife——asouldisciplinedbythyWord,bythyevangelists,bythefollowingofthefollowersofthyChrist。Forthisisthemeaningof”afterhiskind。”Amantendstofollowtheexampleofhisfriend。Thus,he[Paul]says,”BecomeasIam,becauseIhavebecomeasyouare。”[618] Thus,inthis”livingsoul”thereshallbegoodbeasts,actingmeekly。Forthouhastcommandedthis,saying:”Doyourworkinmeeknessandyoushallbelovedbyallmen。”[619]Andthecattlewillbegood,foriftheyeatmuchtheyshallnotsufferfromsatiety;andiftheydonoteatatalltheywillsuffernolack。Andtheserpentswillbegood,notpoisonoustodoharm,butonlycunningintheirwatchfulness——exploringonlyasmuchofthistemporalnatureasisnecessaryinorderthattheeternalnaturemay”beclearlyseen,understoodthroughthethingsthathavebeenmade。”[620]Foralltheseanimalswillobeyreasonwhen,havingbeenrestrainedfromtheirdeath-dealingways,theyliveandbecomegood。 CHAPTERXXII 32。Thus,OLord,ourGod,ourCreator,whenouraffectionshavebeenturnedfromtheloveoftheworld,inwhichwediedbylivingill;andwhenwebegantobe”alivingsoul”bylivingwell;andwhentheword,”Benotconformedtothisworld,”whichthoudidstspeakthroughthyapostle,hasbeenfulfilledinus,thenwillfollowwhatthoudidstimmediatelyaddwhenthousaidst,”Butbetransformedbytherenewingofyourmind。”[621]Thiswillnotnowbe”aftertheirkind,”asifwewerefollowingtheneighborwhowentbeforeus,orasifwewerelivingaftertheexampleofabetterman——forthoudidstnotsay,”Letmanbemadeafterhiskind,”butrather,”Letusmakemaninourownimageandourownlikeness,”[622]sothatthenwemaybeabletoprovewhatthywillis。 Thisiswhythyminister——begettingchildrenbythegospelsothathemightnotalwayshavethembabeswhomhewouldhavetofeedwithmilkandnurseaschildren——thisiswhyhesaid,”Betransformedbytherenewingofyourminds,thatyoumayprovewhatisthegoodandacceptableandperfectwillofGod。”[623] Thereforethoudidstnotsay,”Letmanbemade,”butrather,”Letusmakeman。”Andthoudidstnotsay,”Afterhiskind,”butafter”ourimage”and”likeness。”Indeed,itisonlywhenmanhasbeenrenewedinhismind,andcomestobeholdandapprehendthytruth,thathedoesnotneedanothermanashisdirector,toshowhimhowtoimitatehumanexamples。Instead,bythyguidance,heproveswhatisthygoodandacceptableandperfectwill。Andthoudostteachhim,nowthatheisabletounderstand,toseethetrinityoftheUnityandtheunityoftheTrinity。 Thisiswhythestatementintheplural,”Letusmakeman,” isalsoconnectedwiththestatementinthesingular,”AndGodmademan。”Thusitissaidintheplural,”Afterourlikeness,” andtheninthesingular,”AftertheimageofGod。”ManisthustransformedintheknowledgeofGod,accordingtotheimageofHimwhocreatedhim。Andnow,havingbeenmadespiritual,hejudgesallthings——thatis,allthingsthatareappropriatetobejudged——andhehimselfisjudgedofnoman。[624] CHAPTERXXIII 33。Nowthisphrase,”hejudgesallthings,”meansthatmanhasdominionoverthefishofthesea,andoverthefowloftheair,andoverallcattleandwildbeasts,andoveralltheearth,andovereverycreepingthingthatcreepsontheearth。Andhedoesthisbythepowerofreasoninhismindbywhichheperceives”thethingsoftheSpiritofGod。”[625]But,whenmanwasputinthishighoffice,hedidnotunderstandwhatwasinvolvedandthuswasreducedtothelevelofthebrutebeasts,andmadelikethem。[626] ThereforeinthyChurch,OourGod,bythegracethouhastgivenus——sincewearethyworkmanship,createdingoodworks(notonlythosewhoareinspiritualauthoritybutalsothosewhoarespirituallysubjecttothem)——thoumadestmanmaleandfemale。Hereallareequalinthyspiritualgracewhere,asfarassexisconcerned,thereisneithermalenorfemale,justasthereisneitherJewnorGreek,norbondnorfree。Spiritualmen,therefore,whetherthosewhoareinauthorityorthosewhoaresubjecttoauthority,judgespiritually。Theydonotjudgebythelightofthatspiritualknowledgewhichshinesinthefirmament,foritisinappropriateforthemtojudgebysosublimeanauthority。NordoesitbehoovethemtojudgeconcerningthyBookitself,althoughtherearesomethingsinitwhicharenotclear。 Instead,wesubmitourunderstandingtoitandbelievewithcertaintythatwhatishiddenfromoursightisstillrightlyandtrulyspoken。Inthisway,eventhoughamanisnowspiritualandrenewedbytheknowledgeofGodaccordingtotheimageofhimwhocreatedhim,hemustbeadoerofthelawratherthanitsjudge。[627]Neitherdoesthespiritualmanjudgeconcerningthatdivisionbetweenspiritualandcarnalmenwhichisknowntothyeyes,OGod,andwhichmaynot,asyet,bemademanifesttousbytheirexternalworks,sothatwemayknowthembytheirfruits; yetthou,OGod,knowestthemalreadyandthouhastdividedandcalledthemsecretly,beforethefirmamentwasmade。Nordoesaman,eventhoughheisspiritual,judgethedisorderedstateofsocietyinthisworld。Forwhatbusinessofhisisittojudgethosewhoarewithout,sincehecannotknowwhichofthemmaylateroncomeintothesweetnessofthygrace,andwhichofthemmaycontinueintheperpetualbitternessoftheirimpiety? 34。Man,then,evenifhewasmadeafterthyownimage,didnotreceivethepowerofdominionoverthelightsofheaven,noroverthesecretheaven,noroverthedayandthenightwhichthoucalledstforthbeforethecreationoftheheaven,noroverthegatheringtogetherofthewaterswhichisthesea。Instead,hereceiveddominionoverthefishofthesea,andthefowlsoftheair;andoverallcattle,andalltheearth;andoverallcreepingthingswhichcreepontheearth。 Indeed,hejudgesandapproveswhathefindsrightanddisapproveswhathefindsamiss,whetherinthecelebrationofthosemysteriesbywhichareinitiatedthosewhomthymercyhastsoughtoutinthemidstofmanywaters;orinthatsacramentinwhichisexhibitedtheFishitself[628]which,beingraisedfromthedepths,thepious”earth”[629]feedsupon;or,inthesignsandsymbolsofwords,whicharesubjecttotheauthorityofthyBook——suchsignsasburstforthandsoundfromthemouth,asifitwere”flying”underthefirmament,interpreting,expounding,discoursing,disputing,blessing,invokingthee,sothatthepeoplemayanswer,”Amen。”[630]Thereasonthatallthesewordshavetobepronouncedvocallyisbecauseoftheabyssofthisworldandtheblindnessofourfleshinwhichthoughtscannotbeseendirectly,[631]buthavetobespokenaloudinourears。 Thus,althoughtheflyingfowlaremultipliedontheearth,theystilltaketheiroriginsfromthewaters。 Thespiritualmanalsojudgesbyapprovingwhatisrightandreprovingwhathefindsamissintheworksandmoralsofthefaithful,suchasintheiralmsgiving,whichissignifiedbythephrase,”Theearthbringingforthitsfruit。”Andhejudgesofthe”livingsoul,”whichisthenmadetolivebythediscipliningofheraffectionsinchastity,infasting,andinholymeditation。 Andhealsojudgesconcerningallthosethingswhichareperceivedbythebodilysenses。Foritcanbesaidthatheshouldjudgeinallmattersaboutwhichhealsohasthepowerofcorrection。 CHAPTERXXIV 35。Butwhatisthis;whatkindofmysteryisthis?Behold,OLord,thoudostblessmeninorderthattheymaybe”fruitfulandmultiply,andreplenishtheearth。”Inthisartthounotmakingasigntousthatwemayunderstandsomething[allegorically]?Whydidstthounotalsoblessthelight,whichthoucalledst”theday,”northefirmamentofheaven,northelights,northestars,northeearth,northesea?Imightreply,OourGod,thatthouincreatingusafterthyownimage——Imightreplythatthoudidstwilltobestowthisgiftofblessinguponmanalone,ifthouhadstnotsimilarlyblessedthefishesandthewhales,sothattheytooshouldbefruitfulandmultiplyandreplenishthewatersofthesea;andalsothefowls,sothattheyshouldbemultipliedontheearth。Inlikefashion,Imightsaythatthisblessingproperlybelongedonlytosuchcreaturesasarepropagatedfromtheirownkind,ifIcouldfinditgivenalsoasablessingtotrees,andplants,andthebeastsoftheearth。Butthis”increaseandmultiply”wasnotsaidtoplantsortreesorbeastsorserpents——althoughallofthese,alongwithfishesandbirdsandmen,doactuallyincreasebypropagationandsopreservetheirspecies。 36。What,then,shallIsay,OTruth,OmyLife:thatitwasidlyandvainlysaid?Surelynotthis,OFatherofpiety;farbeitfromaservantofthyWordtosayanythinglikethis!ButifI donotunderstandwhatthoumeanestbythatphrase,letthosewhoarebetterthanI——thatis,thosemoreintelligentthanI—— interpretitbetter,inthedegreethatthouhastgiveneachofustheabilitytounderstand。 Butletalsomyconfessionbepleasinginthyeyes,forI confesstotheethatIbelieve,OLord,thatthouhastnotspokenthusinvain。NorwillIbesilentastowhatmyreadinghassuggestedtome。Foritisvalid,andIdonotseeanythingtopreventmefromthusinterpretingthefigurativesayingsinthybooks。ForIknowthatathingthatisunderstoodinonlyonewayinthemindmaybeexpressedinmanydifferentwaysbythebody; andIknowthatathingthathasonlyonemannerofexpressionthroughthebodymaybeunderstoodinthemindinmanydifferentways。Forconsiderthissingleexample——theloveofGodandofourneighbor——byhowmanydifferentmysteriesandcountlesslanguages,and,ineachlanguage,byhowmanydifferentwaysofspeaking,thisissignifiedcorporeally!Insimilarfashion,the”youngfish”in”thewaters”increaseandmultiply。Ontheotherhand,whoeveryouarewhoreadsthis,observeandbeholdwhatScripturedeclares,andhowthevoicepronouncesit_inonlyoneway_,”InthebeginningGodcreatedheavenandearth。”[632]Isthisnotunderstoodinmanydifferentwaysbydifferentkindsoftrueinterpretationswhichdonotinvolvethedeceitoferror? Thustheoffspringofmenarefruitfulanddomultiply。[633] 37。If,then,weconsiderthenatureofthings,intheirstrictlyliteralsense,andnotallegorically,thephrase,”Befruitfulandmultiply,”appliestoallthingsthatarebegottenbyseed。Butifwetreatthesewordsfiguratively,asIjudgethattheScriptureintendedthemtobe——sinceitcannotbefornothingthatthisblessingisattributedonlytotheoffspringofmarinelifeandman——thenwediscoverthatthecharacteristicoffecunditybelongsalsotothespiritualandphysicalcreations(whicharesignifiedby”heavenandearth”),andalsoinrighteousandunrighteoussouls(whicharesignifiedby”lightanddarkness”)andinthesacredwritersthroughwhomthelawisuttered(whoaresignifiedby”thefirmamentestablishedbetweenthewatersandthewaters”);andintheearthlycommonwealthstillsteepedintheirbitterness(whichissignifiedby”thesea”);andinthezealofholysouls(signifiedby”thedryland”);andtheworksofmercydoneinthispresentlife(signifiedby”theseed- bearingherbsandfruit-bearingtrees”);andinspiritualgiftswhichshineoutforouredification(signifiedby”thelightsofheaven”);andtohumanaffectionsruledbytemperance(signifiedby”thelivingsoul”)。Inalltheseinstanceswemeetwithmultiplicityandfertilityandincrease;buttheparticularwayinwhich”Befruitfulandmultiply”canbeexemplifieddifferswidely。Thusasinglecategorymayincludemanythings,andwecannotdiscoverthemexceptthroughtheirsignsdisplayedcorporeallyandbythethingsbeingexcogitatedbythemind。 Wethusinterpretthephrase,”Thegenerationofthewaters,” asreferringtothecorporeallyexpressedsigns[offecundity],sincetheyaremadenecessarybythedegreeofourinvolvementintheflesh。Butthepowerofhumangenerationreferstotheprocessofmentalconception;thisweseeinthefruitfulnessofreason。Therefore,webelievethattobothofthesetwokindsithasbeensaidbythee,OLord,”Befruitfulandmultiply。”Inthisblessing,Irecognizethatthouhastgrantedusthefacultyandpowernotonlytoexpresswhatweunderstandbyasingleideainmanydifferentwaysbutalsotounderstandinmanywayswhatwefindexpressedobscurelyinasinglestatement。Thusthewatersoftheseaarereplenished,andtheirwavesaresymbolsofdiversemeanings。Andthusalsotheearthisalsoreplenishedwithhumanoffspring。Itsdrynessisthesymbolofitsthirstfortruth,andofthefactthatreasonrulesoverit。 CHAPTERXXV 38。Ialsodesiretosay,OmyLordGod,whatthefollowingScripturesuggeststome。Indeed,Iwillspeakwithoutfear,forIwillspeakthetruth,asthouinspirestmetoknowwhatthoudostwillthatIshouldsayconcerningthesewords。ForIdonotbelieveIcanspeakthetruthbyanyotherinspirationthanthine,sincethouarttheTruth,andeverymanaliar。[634]Hence,hethatspeaksalie,speaksoutofhimself。Therefore,ifIamtospeakthetruth,Imustspeakofthytruth。 Behold,thouhastgivenusforourfoodeveryseed-bearingherbonthefaceoftheearth,andalltreesthatbearinthemselvesseedoftheirownkind;andnottousonly,buttoallthefowlsoftheairandthebeastsofthefieldandallcreepingthings。[635]Still,thouhastnotgiventhesethingstothefishesandgreatwhales。Wehavesaidthatbythesefruitsoftheearththeworksofmercyweresignifiedandfiguredforthinanallegory:thus,fromthefruitfulearth,thingsareprovidedforthenecessitiesoflife。Suchan”earth”wasthegodlyOnesiphorus,towhosehousethougavestmercybecauseheoftenrefreshedPaulandwasnotashamedofhisbonds。[636]ThiswasalsothewayofthebrethrenfromMacedonia,whoboresuchfruitandsuppliedtohimwhathelacked。Butnoticehowhegrievesforcertain”trees,”whichdidnotgivehimthefruitthatwasdue,whenhesaid,”Atmyfirstanswernomanstoodwithme,butallmenforsookme:IprayGod,thatitbenotlaiduptotheircharge。”[637]Forweowe”fruits”tothosewhoministerspiritualdoctrinetousthroughtheirunderstandingofthedivinemysteries。Weowethesetothemasmen。Weowethesefruits,also,to”thelivingsouls”sincetheyofferthemselvesasexamplesforusintheirowncontinence。And,finally,weowethemlikewiseto”theflyingcreatures”becauseoftheirblessingswhicharemultipliedontheearth,for”theirsoundhasgoneforthintoalltheearth。”[638] CHAPTERXXVI 39。Thosewhofindtheirjoyinitarefedbythese”fruits”;butthosewhosegodistheirbellyfindnojoyinthem。 Forinthosewhoofferthesefruits,itisnotthefruititselfthatmatters,butthespiritinwhichtheygivethem。Therefore,hewhoservesGodandnothisownbellymayrejoiceinthem,andI plainlyseewhy。Iseeit,andIrejoicewithhimgreatly。Forhe[Paul]hadreceivedfromthePhilippiansthethingstheyhadsentbyEpaphroditus;yetIseewhyherejoiced。Hewasfedbywhathefoundhisjoyin;for,speakingtruly,hesays,”IrejoiceintheLordgreatly,thatnowatthelastyourcareofmehasflourishedagain,inwhichyouwereoncesocareful,butithadbecomeawearinesstoyou。[639]ThesePhilippians,intheirextendedperiodofwearinessinwell-doing,hadbecomeweakandwere,sotosay,driedup;theywerenolongerbringingforththefruitsofgoodworks。AndnowPaulrejoicesinthem——andnotjustforhimselfalone——becausetheywereflourishingagaininministeringtohisneeds。Thereforeheadds:”Idonotspeakinrespectofmywant,forIhavelearnedinwhatsoeverstateIamtherewithtobecontent。Iknowbothhowtobeabasedandhowtoabound;everywhereandinallthingsIaminstructedbothtobefullandtobehungry,bothtoaboundandtosufferneed。IcandoallthingsthroughChristwhostrengthenethme。”[640] 40。Wheredoyoufindjoyinallthings,OgreatPaul?Whatisthecauseofyourjoy?Onwhatdoyoufeed,Oman,renewednowintheknowledgeofGodaftertheimageofhimwhocreatedyou,O Andsohesaid,”You[Philippians]knowalsothatinthebeginningofthegospel,whenIdepartedfromMacedonia,nochurchsharedwithmeinregardtogivingandreceiving,exceptyouonly。ForeveninThessalonicayousenttimeandtimeagain,accordingtomyneed。”[642]Henowfindshisjoyinthefactthattheyhavereturnedonceagaintothesegoodworks,andheismadegladthattheyareflourishingagain,asafruitfulfieldwhenitrecoversitsfertility。 41。Wasitonaccountofhisownneedsalonethathesaid,”Youhavesentmegiftsaccordingtomyneeds?”Doeshefindjoyinthat?Certainlynotforthatalone。Buthowdoweknowthis? Weknowitbecausehehimselfadds,”NotbecauseIdesireagift,butbecauseIdesirefruit。”[643] NowIhavelearnedfromthee,OmyGod,howtodistinguishbetweentheterms”gift”and”fruit。”A”gift”isthethingitself,givenbyonewhobestowslife’snecessitiesonanother—— suchasmoney,food,drink,clothing,shelter,andaid。But”thefruit”isthegoodandrightwillofthegiver。ForthegoodTeachernotonlysaid,”Hethatreceivesaprophet,”butheadded,”Inthenameofaprophet。”Andhedidnotsayonly,”Hewhoreceivesarighteousman,”butadded,”Inthenameofarighteousman。”[644]Thus,surely,theformershallreceivetherewardofaprophet;thelatter,thatofarighteousman。Nordidhesayonly,”Whoevershallgiveacupofcoldwatertooneoftheselittleonestodrink,”butadded,”Inthenameofadisciple”;andconcluded,”TrulyItellyouheshallnotlosehisreward。”The”gift”involvesreceivingaprophet,receivingarighteousman,handingacupofcoldwatertoadisciple:butthe”fruit”istodoallthisinthenameofaprophet,inthenameofarighteousman,inthenameofadisciple。Elijahwasfedbythewidowwith”fruit,”forsheknewthatshewasfeedingamanofGodandthisiswhyshefedhim。Buthewasfedbytheravenwitha”gift。” TheinnermanofElijahwasnotfedbythis”gift,”butonlytheouterman,whichotherwisemighthaveperishedfromthelackofsuchfood。 CHAPTERXXVII 42。ThereforeIwillspeakbeforethee,OLord,whatistrue,inorderthattheuninstructed[645]andtheinfidels,whorequirethemysteriesofinitiationandgreatworksofmiracles—— whichwebelievearesignifiedbythephrase,”Fishesandgreatwhales”——maybehelpedinbeinggained[fortheChurch]whentheyendeavortoprovidethatthyservantsarerefreshedinbody,orotherwiseaidedinthispresentlife。Fortheydonotreallyknowwhythisshouldbedone,andtowhatend。Thustheformerdonotfeedthelatter,andthelatterdonotfeedtheformer;forneitherdotheformeroffertheir”gifts”throughaholyandrightintent,nordotheothersrejoiceinthegiftsofthosewhodonotasyetseethe”fruit。”Foritisonthe”fruit”thatthemindisfed,andbywhichitisgladdened。And,therefore,fishesandwhalesarenotfedonsuchfoodastheearthalonebringsforthwhentheyhavebeenseparatedanddividedfromthebitternessof”thewaters”ofthesea。 CHAPTERXXVIII 43。Andthou,OGod,didstseeeverythingthatthouhadstmadeand,behold,itwasverygood。[646]Wealsoseethewholecreationand,behold,itisallverygood。Ineachseparatekindofthywork,whenthoudidstsay,”Letthembemade,”andtheyweremade,thoudidstseethatitwasgood。Ihavecountedseventimeswhereitiswrittenthatthoudidstseewhatthouhadstmadewas”good。”Andthereistheeighthtimewhenthoudidstsee_all_ thingsthatthouhadstmadeand,behold,theywerenotonlygoodbutalso_very_good;fortheywerenowseenasatotality。 Individuallytheywereonlygood;buttakenasatotalitytheywerebothgoodandverygood。Beautifulbodiesexpressthistruth;forabodywhichconsistsofseveralparts,eachofwhichisbeautiful,isitselffarmorebeautifulthananyofitsindividualpartsseparately,bywhosewell-orderedunionthewholeiscompletedeventhoughthesepartsareseparatelybeautiful。 CHAPTERXXIX 44。AndIlookedattentivelytofindwhetheritwassevenoreighttimesthatthoudidstseethyworksweregood,whentheywerepleasingtothee,butIfoundthattherewasno”time”inthyseeingwhichwouldhelpmetounderstandinwhatsensethouhadstlookedsomany”times”atwhatthouhadstmade。AndIsaid:”O Lord,isnotthisthyScripturetrue,sincethouarttrue,andthytruthdothsetitforth?Why,then,dostthousaytomethatinthyseeingtherearenotimes,whilethisScripturetellsmethatwhatthoumadesteachdaythoudidstseetobegood;andwhenI countedthemIfoundhowmany’times’?”Tothesethings,thoudidstreplytome,forthouartmyGod,andthoudostspeaktothyservantwithastrongvoiceinhisinnerear,mydeafness,andcrying:”Oman,whatmyScripturesays,Isay。Butitspeaksintermsoftime,whereastimedoesnotaffectmyWord——myWordwhichexistscoeternallywithmyself。ThusthethingsyouseethroughmySpirit,Isee;justaswhatyousaythroughmySpirit,Isay。Butwhileyouseethosethingsintime,Idonotseethemintime;andwhenyouspeakthosethingsintime,Idonotspeakthemintime。” CHAPTERXXX 45。AndIheardthis,OLordmyGod,anddrankupadropofsweetnessfromthytruth,andunderstoodthattherearesomementowhomthyworksaredispleasing,whosaythatmanyofthemthoudidstmakeunderthecompulsionofnecessity——suchasthepatternoftheheavensandthecoursesofthestars——andthatthoudidstnotmakethemoutofwhatwasthine,butthattheywerealreadycreatedelsewhereandfromothersources。Itwasthus[theysay]thatthoudidstcollectandfashionandweavethemtogether,asiffromthyconqueredenemiesthoudidstraiseupthewallsoftheuniverse;sothat,builtintotherampartsofthebuilding,theymightnotbeableasecondtimetorebelagainstthee。And,evenofotherthings,theysaythatthoudidstneithermakethemnorarrangethem——forexample,allfleshandalltheverysmalllivingcreatures,andallthingsfastenedtotheearthbytheirroots。But[theysay]ahostilemindandanaliennature——notcreatedbytheeandineverywaycontrarytothee——begotandframedallthesethingsinthenetherpartsoftheworld。[647] Theywhospeakthusaremad[insani],sincetheydonotseethyworksthroughthySpirit,norrecognizetheeinthem。 CHAPTERXXXI 46。ButforthosewhoseethesethingsthroughthySpirit,itisthouwhoseesttheminthem。When,therefore,theyseethatthesethingsaregood,itisthouwhoseestthattheyaregood; andwhatsoeverthingsarepleasingbecauseofthee,itisthouwhodostgiveuspleasureinthosethings。ThosethingswhichpleaseusthroughthySpiritarepleasingtotheeinus。”Forwhatmanknowsthethingsofamanexceptthespiritofamanwhichisinhim?Evenso,nomanknowsthethingsofGod,buttheSpiritofGod。Nowwehavenotreceivedthespiritoftheworld,buttheSpiritofGod,thatwemightknowthethingsthatarefreelygiventousfromGod。”[648]AndIamadmonishedtosay:”Yes,truly。 NomanknowsthethingsofGod,buttheSpiritofGod:buthow,then,dowealsoknowwhatthingsaregivenusbyGod?”Theanswerisgivenme:”BecauseweknowthesethingsbyhisSpirit; fornooneknowsbuttheSpiritofGod。”ButjustasitistrulysaidtothosewhoweretospeakthroughtheSpiritofGod,”Itisnotyouwhospeak,”soitisalsotrulysaidtothemwhoknowthroughtheSpiritofGod,”Itisnotyouyourselveswhoknow,” andjustasrightlyitmaybesaidtothosewhoperceivethroughtheSpiritofGodthatathingisgood;itisnottheywhosee,butGodwhoseeththatitisgood。 Itis,therefore,onethingtothinklikethemenwhojudgesomethingtobebadwhenitisgood,asdothosewhomwehavealreadymentioned。Itisquiteanotherthingthatamanshouldseeasgoodwhatisgood——asisthecasewithmanywhomthycreationpleasesbecauseitisgood,yetwhatpleasestheminitisnotthee,andsotheywouldprefertofindtheirjoyinthycreaturesratherthantofindtheirjoyinthee。Itisstillanotherthingthatwhenamanseesathingtobegood,Godshouldseeinhimthatitisgood——thattrulyhemaybelovedinwhathehathmade,hewhocannotbelovedexceptthroughtheHolySpiritwhichhehathgivenus:”BecausetheloveofGodisshedabroadinourheartsbytheHolySpiritwhoisgiventous。”[649] Itisbyhimthatweseewhateverweseetobegoodinanydegree,sinceitisfromhim,whodothnotexistinanyparticulardegreebutwhosimplyiswhatheis。[650] CHAPTERXXXII 47。Thanksbetothee,OLord!Weseetheheavenandtheearth,eitherthecorporealpart——higherandlower——orthespiritualandphysicalcreation。Andweseethelightmadeanddividedfromthedarknessfortheadornmentoftheseparts,fromwhichtheuniversalmassoftheworldortheuniversalcreationisconstituted。Weseethefirmamentofheaven,eithertheoriginal”body”oftheworldbetweenthespiritual(higher)watersandthecorporeal(lower)waters[651]ortheexpanseofair——whichisalsocalled”heaven”——throughwhichthefowlsofheavenwander,betweenthewaterswhichmoveincloudsabovethemandwhichdropdownindewonclearnights,andthosewaterswhichareheavyandflowalongtheearth。Weseethewatersgatheredtogetherinthevastplainsofthesea;andthedryland,firstbareandthenformed,soastobevisibleandwell-ordered;andthesoilofherbsandtrees。Weseethelightshiningfromabove——thesuntoservetheday,themoonandthestarstogivecheerinthenight;andweseebyallthesethattheintervalsoftimearemarkedandnoted。Weseeoneverysidethewateryelements,fruitfulwithfishes,beasts,andbirds——andwenoticethatthedensityoftheatmospherewhichsupportstheflightsofbirdsisincreasedbytheevaporationofthewaters。Weseethefaceoftheearth,repletewithearthlycreatures;andman,createdinthyimageandlikeness,intheveryimageandlikenessofthee——thatis,havingthepowerofreasonandunderstanding——byvirtueofwhichhehasbeensetoverallirrationalcreatures。Andjustasthereisinhissouloneelementwhichcontrolsbyitspowerofreflectionandanotherwhichhasbeenmadesubjectsothatitshouldobey,soalso,physically,thewomanwasmadefortheman; for,althoughshehadalikenatureofrationalintelligenceinthemind,stillinthesexofherbodysheshouldbesimilarlysubjecttothesexofherhusband,astheappetiteofactionissubjectedtothedeliberationofthemindinordertoconceivetherulesofrightaction。Thesethingswesee,andeachofthemisgood;andthewholeisverygood! CHAPTERXXXIII 48。Letthyworkspraisethee,thatwemaylovethee;andletuslovetheethatthyworksmaypraisethee——thoseworkswhichhaveabeginningandanendintime——arisingandasetting,agrowthandadecay,aformandaprivation。Thus,theyhavetheirsuccessionsofmorningandevening,partlyhidden,partlyplain。Fortheyweremadefromnothingbythee,andnotfromthyself,andnotfromanymatterthatisnotthine,orthatwascreatedbeforehand。Theywerecreatedfromconcreatedmatter——thatis,matterthatwascreatedbytheeatthesametimethatthoudidstformitsformlessness,withoutanyintervaloftime。 Yet,sincethematterofheavenandearthisonethingandtheformofheavenandearthisanotherthing,thoudidstcreatematteroutofabsolutelynothing(deomninonihilo),buttheformoftheworldthoudidstformfromformlessmatter(deinformimateria)。Butbothweredoneatthesametime,sothatformfollowedmatterwithnodelayinginterval。 CHAPTERXXXIV 49。Wehavealsoexploredthequestionofwhatthoudidstdesiretofigureforth,bothinthecreationandinthedescriptionofthingsinthisparticularorder。Andwehaveseenthatthingstakenseparatelyaregood,andallthingstakentogetherareverygood,bothinheavenandearth。AndwehaveseenthatthiswaswroughtthroughthyWord,thyonlySon,theheadandthebodyoftheChurch,anditsignifiesthypredestinationbeforealltimes,withoutmorningandevening。Butwhen,intime,thoudidstbegintounfoldthethingsdestinedbeforetime,sothatthoumightestmakehiddenthingsmanifestandmightestreorderourdisorders——sinceoursinswereoverusandwehadsunkintoprofounddarknessawayfromthee,andthygoodSpiritwasmovingoverustohelpusindueseason——thoudidstjustifytheungodlyandalsodidstdividethemfromthewicked; andthoumadesttheauthorityofthyBookafirmamentbetweenthoseabovewhowouldbeamenabletotheeandthosebeneathwhowouldbesubjecttothem。Andthoudidstgatherthesocietyofunbelievers[652]intoaconspiracy,inorderthatthezealofthefaithfulmightbecomemanifestandthattheymightbringforthworksofmercyuntothee,givingtheirearthlyrichestothepoortoobtainheavenlyriches。Thenthoudidstkindlethelightsinthefirmament,whicharethyholyones,whohavetheWordofLifeandwhoshinewithanexaltedauthority,warrantedtothembytheirspiritualgifts。Andthen,fortheinstructionoftheunbelievingnations,thoudidstoutofphysicalmatterproducethemysteriesandthevisiblemiraclesandthesoundsofwordsinharmonywiththefirmamentofthyBook,throughwhichthefaithfulshouldbeblessed。Afterthisthoudidstform”thelivingsoul” ofthefaithful,throughtheorderingoftheirpassionsbythestrengthofcontinence。Andthenthoudidstrenew,afterthyimageandlikeness,themindwhichisfaithfultotheealone,whichneedstoimitatenohumanauthority。Thus,thoudidstsubordinaterationalactiontothehigherexcellenceofintelligence,asthewomanissubordinatetotheman。Finally,inallthyministrieswhichwereneededtoperfectthefaithfulinthislife,thoudidstwillthatthesesamefaithfulonesshouldthemselvesbringforthgoodthings,profitablefortheirtemporaluseandfruitfulforthelifetocome。Weseeallthesethings,andtheyareverygood,becausethouseestthemthusinus——thouwhohastgivenusthySpirit,bywhichwemayseethemsoandlovetheeinthem。 CHAPTERXXXV
