Thisamountofinconsistencywillonlycountasamiableweakness；
butastrongerdegreeofheterogeneitymaymakehavocofthesubject’slife。Therearepersonswhoseexistenceislittlemorethanaseriesofzig-zags，asnowonetendencyandnowanothergetstheupperhand。Theirspiritwarswiththeirflesh，theywishforincompatibles，waywardimpulsesinterrupttheirmostdeliberateplans，andtheirlivesareonelongdramaofrepentanceandofefforttorepairmisdemeanorsandmistakes。

thattheaccounthegivesintheConfessionsispremature。Thecrisisinthegardenmarkedadefinitiveconversionfromhisformerlife，butitwastotheneo-platonicspiritualismandonlyahalfwaystagetowardChristianity。Thelatterheappearsnotfullyandradicallytohaveembraceduntilfouryearsmorehadpassed。
