OnhisreturntoCambridgeintheMaytermof1858,Ernestandafewotherfriendswhowerealsointendedfororderscametotheconclusionthattheymustnowtakeamoreseriousviewoftheirposition。Theythereforeattendedchapelmoreregularlythanhitherto,andheldeveningmeetingsofasomewhatfurtivecharacter,atwhichtheywouldstudytheNewTestament。TheyevenbegantocommittheEpistlesofStPaultomemoryintheoriginalGreek。 TheygotupBeveridgeontheThirty-nineArticles,andPearsonontheCreed;intheirhoursofrecreationtheyreadMore’s“MysteryofGodliness。”whichErnestthoughtwascharming,andTaylor’s“HolyLivingandDying。”whichalsoimpressedhimdeeply,throughwhathethoughtwasthesplendourofitslanguage。TheyhandedthemselvesovertotheguidanceofDeanAlford’snotesontheGreekTestament,whichmadeErnestbetterunderstandwhatwasmeantby“difficulties。”butalsomadehimfeelhowshallowandimpotentweretheconclusionsarrivedatbyGermanneologians,withwhoseworks,beinginnocentofGerman,hewasnototherwiseacquainted。SomeofthefriendswhojoinedhiminthesepursuitswereJohnians,andthemeetingswereoftenheldwithinthewallsofStJohn’s。
