classsport,andIdonotregarditasbrutalizing。Ofcoursematchescanbeconductedunderconditionsthatmakethembrutalizing。Butthisistrueoffootballgamesandofmostotherroughandvigoroussports。 Mostcertainlyprize-fightingisnothalfasbrutalizingordemoralizingasmanyformsofbigbusinessandofthelegalworkcarriedoninconnectionwithbigbusiness。Powerful,vigorousmenofstronganimaldevelopmentmusthavesomewayinwhichtheiranimalspiritscanfindvent。WhenIwasPoliceCommissionerIfound(andJacobRiiswillbackmeupinthis)thattheestablishmentofaboxingclubinatoughneighborhoodalwaystendedtodoawaywithknifingandgun-fightingamongtheyoungfellowswhowouldotherwisehavebeeninmurderousgangs。Manyoftheseyoungfellowswerenotnaturallycriminalsatall,buttheyhadtohavesomeoutletfortheiractivities。InthesamewayIhavealwaysregardedboxingasafirst-
