ItremainsamatterforspeculationjusthowtheLadyMaryfeltforFilmerandjustwhatshethoughtofhim。Atthirty-eightonemayhavegatheredmuchwisdomandstillbenotaltogetherwise,andtheimaginationstillfunctionsactivelyenoughincreatingglamoursandeffectingtheimpossible。Hecamebeforehereyesasaverycentralman,andthatalwayscounts,andhehadpowers,uniquepowersasitseemed,atanyrateintheair。Theperformancewiththemodelhadjustatouchofthequalityofapotentincantation,andwomenhaveeverdisplayedanunreasonabledispositiontoimaginethatwhenamanhaspowershemustnecessarilyhavePower。Givensomuch,andwhatwasnotgoodinFilmer’smannerandappearancebecameanaddedmerit。Hewasmodest,hehateddisplay,butgivenanoccasionwhereTRUEqualitiesareneeded,then——thenonewouldsee!
