Sometimes,inthecooloftheevening,mydevotedservitorwouldleadmeoutuponthepi-piinfrontofthehouse,and,seatingmenearitsedge,protectmyoccasionallyhoveredintheair,bywrappingmeroundwithalargerolloftappa。Hethenbustledabout,andemployedhimselfatleasttwentyminutesinadjustingeverythingtosecuremypersonalcomfort。 Havingperfectedhisarrangements,hewouldgetmypipe,and,lightingit,wouldhandittome。Oftenhewasobligedtostrikealightfortheoccasion;andasthemodeheadoptedwasentirelydifferentfromwhatIhadeverseenorheardofbefore,Iwilldescribeit。 Astraight,dry,andpartly-decayedstickoftheHabiscus,aboutsixfeetinlength,andhalfasmanyinchesindiameter,withasmallerbitofwood,notmorethanafootlong,andscarcelyaninchwide,isasinvariablytobemetwithineveryhouseinTypee,asaboxoflucifermatchesinthecornerofakitchen-cupboardathome。 Theislander,placingthelargerstickobliquelyagainstsomeobject,withoneendelevatedatanangleofforty-fivedegrees,mountsastrideofit,likeanurchinabouttogallopoffuponacane,andthen,graspingthesmalleronefirmlyinbothhands,herubsitspointedendslowlyupanddowntheextentofafewinchesontheprincipalstick,untilatlasthemakesanarrowgrooveinthewood,withanabruptterminationatthepointfarthestfromhim,whereallthedustyparticleswhichthefrictioncreatesareaccumulatedinalittleheap。 AtfirstKory-Korygoestoworkquiteleisurely,butgraduallyquickenshispace,and,waxingwarmintheemployment,edge,drivesthestickfuriouslyalongthesmokingchannel,plyinghishandstoandfrowithamazingrapidity,theperspirationstartingfromeverypore。Asheapproachestheclimaxofhiseffort,hepantsandgaspsforbreath,andhiseyesalmoststartfromtheirsocketswiththeviolenceofhisexertions。Thisisthecriticalstageoftheoperation;allhispreviouslaboursarevainifhecannotsustaintherapidityofthemovementuntilthereluctantsparkisproduced。 Suddenlyhestops,becomesperfectlymotionless。Hishandsstillretaintheirholdofthesmallerstick,whichispressedconvulsivelyagainstthefartherendofthechannel,amongthefinepowderthereaccumulated,asifhehadjustpiercedthroughandthroughsomelittleviperthatwaswrigglingandstrugglingtoescapefromhisclutches。Thenextmomentadelicatewreathofsmokecurlsspirallyintotheair,theheapofdustyparticlesglowswithfire,andKory-Kory,almostbreathless,dismountsfromhissteed。 ThisoperationappearedtometobethemostlaboriousspeciesofworkperformedinTypee;andhadIpossessedasufficientintimacywiththelanguagetohaveconveyedmyideasuponthesubject,Ishouldcertainlyhavesuggestedtothemostinfluentialofthenativestheexpediencyofestablishingacollegeofvestals,tobecentrallylocatedinthevalley,forthepurposeofkeepingalivetheindispensablearticleoffire,soastosupersedethenecessityofsuchavastoutlayofstrengthandgoodtemperaswereusuallysquanderedontheseoccasions。Theremight,however,bespecialdifficultiesincarryingthisplanintoexecution。 Whatastrikingevidencedoesthisoperationfurnishofthewidedifferencebetweentheextremeofsavageandcivilizedlife!A gentlemanofTypeecanbringupanumerousfamilyofchildren,andgivethemallahighlyrespectablecannibaleducation,withinfinitelylesstoilandanxietythanheexpendsinthesimpleprocessofstrikingalight;whilstapoorEuropeanartisan,whothroughtheinstrumentalityofaluciferperformsthesameoperationinonesecond,isputtohiswit’sendtoprovideforhisstarvingoffspringthatfood,whichthechildrenofaPolynesianfather,withouttroublingtheirparents,pluckfromthebranchesofeverytreearoundthem。 ALLtheinhabitantsofthevalleytreatedmewithgreatkindness;butastothehouseholdofMarheyo,withwhomIwasnowpermanentlydomiciled,nothingcouldsurpasstheireffortstoministertomycomfort。Tothegratificationofmypalatetheypaidthemostunweariedattention。Theycontinuallyinvitedmetopartakeoffood,andwhenaftereatingheartilyIdeclinedtheviandstheycontinuedtoofferme,theyseemedtothinkthatmyappetitestoodinneedofsomepiquantstimulanttoexciteitsactivity。 Inpursuanceofthisidea,oldMarheyohimselfwouldhiehimawaytothesea-shorebythebreakofday,forthepurposeofcollectingvariousspeciesofrareseaweed;someofwhich,amongthesepeople,areconsideredagreatluxury。Afterawholedayspentinthisemployment,hewouldreturnaboutnightfallwithseveralcocoa-nutshellsfilledwithdifferentdescriptionsofkelp。Inpreparingtheseforuse,hemanifestedalltheostentationofaprofessedcook,althoughthechiefmysteryoftheaffairappearedtoconsistinpouringwaterinjudiciousquantitiesupontheslimycontentsofhiscocoa-nutshells。 Thefirsttimehesubmittedoneofthesesalinesaladstomycriticalattention,Inaturallythoughtthatanythingcollectedatsuchpainsmustpossesspeculiarmerits;butonemouthfulwasacompletedose;andgreatwastheconsternationoftheoldwarriorattherapiditywithwhichIejectedhisepicureantreat。 Howtrueitis,thattherarityofanyparticulararticleenhancesitsvalueamazingly。Insomepartofthevalley-Iknownotwhere,butprobablyintheneighbourhoodofthesea-thegirlsweresometimesinthehabitofprocuringsmallquantitiesofsalt,athimble-fullorsobeingtheresultoftheunitedlaboursofapartyoffiveorsixemployedforthegreaterpartoftheday。Thispreciouscommoditytheybroughttothehouse,envelopedinmultitudinousfoldsofleaves; andasaspecialmarkoftheesteeminwhichtheyheldme,wouldspreadanimmenseleafontheground,anddroppingonebyoneafewminuteparticlesofthesaltuponit,invitemetotastethem。 Fromtheextravagantvalueplaceduponthearticle,Iverilybelieve,thatwithabushelofcommonLiverpoolsalt,alltherealestateinTypeemighthavebeenpurchased。Withasmallpinchofitinonehand,andaquartersectionofabread-fruitintheother,thegreatestchiefinthevalleywouldhavelaughedatalltheluxuriesofaParisiantable。 Thecelebrityofthebread-fruittree,andtheconspicuousplaceitoccupiesinaTypeebilloffare,inducesmetogiveatsomelengthageneraldescriptionofthetree,andthevariousmodesinwhichthefruitisprepared。 Thebread-fruittree,initsgloriousprime,isagrandandtoweringobject,formingthesamefeatureinaMarquesanlandscapethatthepatriarchalelmdoesinNewEnglandscenery。Thelattertreeitnotalittleresemblesinheight,inthewidespreadofitsstalwartbranches,andinitsvenerableandimposingaspect。 Theleavesofthebread-fruitareofgreatsize,andtheiredgesarecutandscollopedasfantasticallyasthoseofalady’slacecollar。Astheyannuallytendtowardsdecay,theyalmostrival,inthebrilliantvarietyoftheirgraduallychanginghues,thefleetingshadesoftheexpiringdolphin。TheautumnaltintsofourAmericanforests,gloriousastheyare,sinkintonothingincomparisonwiththistree。 Theleaf,inoneparticularstage,whennearlyalltheprismaticcoloursareblendedonitssurface,isoftenconvertedbythenativesintoasuperbandstrikinghead-dress。Theprincipalfibretraversingitslengthbeingsplitopenaconvenientdistance,andtheelasticsidesoftheaperturepressedapart,theheadisinsertedbetweenthem,theleafdroopingononeside,withitsforwardhalfturnedjauntilyuponthebrows,andtheremainingpartspreadinglaterallybehindtheears。 Thefruitsomewhatresemblesinmagnitudeandgeneralappearanceoneofourcitronmelonsofordinarysize;but,unlikethecitron,ithasnosectionallinesdrawnalongtheoutside。Itssurfaceisdottedalloverwithlittleconicalprominences,lookingnotunliketheknobsonanantiquatedchurchdoor。Therindisperhapsaneighthofaninchinthickness;anddenudedofthis,atthetimewhenitisinthegreatestperfection,thefruitpresentsabeautifulglobeofwhitepulp,thewholeofwhichmaybeeaten,withtheexceptionofaslendercore,whichiseasilyremoved。 Thebread-fruit,however,isneverused,andisindeedaltogetherunfittobeeaten,untilsubmittedinoneformorothertotheactionoffire。 Themostsimplemannerinwhichthisoperationisperformed,and,Ithink,thebest,consistsinplacinganynumberofthefreshly-pluckedfruit,wheninaparticularstateofgreenness,amongtheembersofafire,inthesamewaythatyouwouldroastapotato。Afterthelapseoftenorfifteenminutes,thegreenrindembrownsandcracks,showingthroughthefissuresinitssidesthemilk-whiteinterior。Assoonasitcoolstherinddropsoff,andyouthenhavethesoftroundpulpinitspurestandmostdeliciousstate。Thuseaten,ithasamildandpleasingflavour。 Sometimesafterhavingbeenroastedinthefire,thenativessnatchitbrisklyfromtheembers,andpermittingittoslipoutoftheyieldingrindintoavesselofcoldwater,stirupthemixture,whichtheycall“bo-a-sho。“Inevercouldendurethiscompound,andindeedthepreparationisnotgreatlyinvogueamongthemorepoliteTypees。 Thereisoneform,however,inwhichthefruitisoccasionallyserved,thatrendersitadishfitforaking。Assoonasitistakenfromthefiretheexteriorisremoved,thecoreextracted,andtheremainingpartisplacedinasortofshallowstonemortar,andbrisklyworkedwithapestleofthesamesubstance。Whileonepersonisperformingthisoperation,anothertakesaripecocoa-nut,andbreakingitinhalf,whichtheyalsodoverycleverly,proceedstogratethejuicymeatintofineparticles。Thisisdonebymeansofapieceofmother-of-pearlshell,lashedfirmlytotheextremeendofaheavystick,withitsstraightsideaccuratelynotchedlikeasaw。 Thestickissometimesagrotesquely-formedlimbofatree,withthreeorfourbranchestwistingfromitsbodylikesomanyshapelesslegs,andsustainingittwoorthreefeetfromtheground。 Thenative,firstplacingacalabashbeneaththenose,asitwere,ofhiscurious-lookinglog-steed,forthepurposeofreceivingthegratedfragmentsastheyfall,mountsastrideofitasifitwereahobby-horse,andtwirlingtheinsideofoneofhishemispheresofcocoa-nutaroundthesharpteethofthemother-of-pearlshell,thepurewhitemeatfallsinsnowyshowersintothereceptacleprovided。 Havingobtainedaquantitysufficientforhispurpose,heplacesitinabagmadeofthenet-likefibroussubstanceattachedtoallcocoa-nuttrees,andcompressingitoverthebread-fruit,whichbeingnowsufficientlypounded,isputintoawoodenbowl-extractsathickcreamymilk。Thedeliciousliquidsoonbubblesroundthefruit,andleavesitatlastjustpeepingaboveitssurface。 Thispreparationiscalled“kokoo,“andamostlusciouspreparationitis。Thehobby-horseandthepestleandmortarwereingreatrequisitionduringthetimeIremainedinthehouseofMarheyo,andKory-Koryhadfrequentoccasiontoshowhisskillintheiruse。 Butthegreatstaplearticlesoffoodintowhichthebread-fruitisconvertedbythesenativesareknownrespectivelybythenamesofAmarandPoee-Poee。
