This,then,isahappycouple;theverypigeonsandthecrowsneednotblushforthenestatKensingtonGravel—pits.TherethedivineinstitutionMarriagetakesitsnaturalcolors,anditisatoncepleasantandgoodtocatchsuchglimpsesofHeaven’sdesign,andsadtothinkhowoftenthisgreatboon,accordedbyGodtomanandwoman,musthavebeenabusedandperverted,ereitcouldhavesunktobethestandingbuttoffarce—writers,andthethemeofweeklypunsters. ChristieandCharlesarefriends——fortheyaremanandwife. ChristieandCharlesareloversstill——fortheyaremanandwife. ChristieandCharlesareoneforever——fortheyaremanandwife. Thiswifebrightensthehouse,fromkitchentogarret,forherhusband; thishusbandworkslikeakingforhiswife’scomfort,andforhisownfame——andthatfameishiswife’sglory.Whenoneoftheseexpressesorhintsawish,theother’sfirstimpulseistofindthemeans,nottheobjections. Whatterrorshasoldageforthishappypair?itcannotmakethemugly,for,thoughthepurplelightofyouthrecedes,anewkindoftranquilbeauty,thealoe—blossomofmanyyearsofinnocence,comesto,andsitslikeadoveupon,theagedfaces,wheregoodness,sympathyandintelligencehaveharboredtogethersolong;andwhereevilpassionshaveflitted(forweareallhuman),butfoundnoresting—place.
