Wewentintooneortwoofthebeer-halls——notintotheswellcafes,crowdedwithtouristsandMunichmasherdom,butintothelow- ceilinged,smoke-grimedcellarswherethelifeofthepeopleistobeseen。 Theungenteelpeopleinacountryaresomuchmoreinterestingthanthegentlefolks。Oneladyorgentlemanispainfullylikeeveryotherladyorgentleman。Thereissolittleindividuality,solittlecharacter,amongtheuppercirclesoftheworld。Theytalklikeeachother,theythinkandactlikeeachother,theydresslikeeachother,andlookverymuchlikeeachother。Wegentlefolksonlyplayatliving。Wehaveourrulesandregulationsforthegame,whichmustnotbeinfringed。Ourunwrittenguide-booksdirectuswhattodoandwhattosayateachturnofthemeaninglesssport。
