Whenitwasdaylight,thegirlbathedherfaceinalittleripplingbrook,andsoonaftertheyallstartedtowardtheEmeraldCity。 Thiswastobeaneventfuldayforthetravelers。Theyhadhardlybeenwalkinganhourwhentheysawbeforethemagreatditchthatcrossedtheroadanddividedtheforestasfarastheycouldseeoneitherside。Itwasaverywideditch,andwhentheycreptuptotheedgeandlookedintoittheycouldseeitwasalsoverydeep,andthereweremanybig,jaggedrocksatthebottom。 Tobesure,thebroadrivernowcutthemofffromthisbeautifulland。Buttheraftwasnearlydone,andaftertheTinWoodmanhadcutafewmorelogsandfastenedthemtogetherwithwoodenpins,theywerereadytostart。DorothysatdowninthemiddleoftheraftandheldTotoinherarms。WhentheCowardlyLionsteppedupontheraftittippedbadly,forhewasbigandheavy;buttheScarecrowandtheTinWoodmanstoodupontheotherendtosteadyit,andtheyhadlongpolesintheirhandstopushtheraftthroughthewater。 Theygotalongquitewellatfirst,butwhentheyreachedthemiddleoftherivertheswiftcurrentswepttheraftdownstream,fartherandfartherawayfromtheroadofyellowbrick。Andthewatergrewsodeepthatthelongpoleswouldnottouchthebottom。
