Thatreasonwasfurnishedmebythecomplacentandunfrightenedprophetsfouryearsago，andithasbeenfurnishedmeagainto-day。Ifconversionstonewreligionsortooldoneswereinanyconsiderabledegreeachievedthroughtheintellect，theaforesaidreasonwouldbesoundandsufficient，nodoubt；theinquirerintoChristianSciencemightgoawayunconvincedandunconverted。Butweallknowthatconversionsareseldommadeinthatway；thatsuchathingasaseriousandpainstakingandfairlycompetentinquiryintotheclaimsofareligionorofapoliticaldogmaisarareoccurrence；andthatthevastmassofmenandwomenarefarfrombeingcapableofmakingsuchanexamination。Theyarenotcapable，forthereasonthattheirminds，howsoevergoodtheymaybe，arenottrainedforsuchexaminations。Themindnottrainedforthatworkisnomorecompetenttodoitthanarelawyersandfarmerscompetenttomakesuccessfulclotheswithoutlearningthetailor\'strade。Thereareseventy-fivemillionmenandwomenamonguswhodonotknowhowtocutoutandmakeadress-suit，andtheywouldnotthinkoftrying；yettheyallthinktheycancompetentlythinkoutapoliticalorreligiousschemewithoutanyapprenticeshiptothebusiness，andmanyofthembelievetheyhaveactuallyworkedthatmiracle。But，indeed，thetruthis，almostallthemenandwomenofournationorofanyothergettheirreligionandtheirpoliticswheretheygettheirastronomy——entirelyatsecondhand。Beinguntrained，theyarenomoreabletointelligentlyexamineadogmaorapolicythantheyaretocalculateaneclipse。
