IhaveinformerdaysheardDr。CollieroftheCommonsloudlycondemnedforutteringsentiments，whichtwentyyearsafterIhaveheardasloudlyapplaudedfromthelipsofDr。Johnson，concerningthewell—knownwriterofthatcelebratedwork：butifpeoplewilllivelongenoughinthiscapriciousworld，suchinstancesofpartialitywillshockthemlessandlessbyfrequentrepetition。Mr。Johnsonknewmankind，andwishedtomendthem：hetherefore，tothepietyandpurereligion，theuntaintedintegrity，andscrupulousmoralsofmyearliestandmostdisinterestedfriend，judiciouslycontrivedtojoinacautiousattentiontothecapacityofhishearers，andaprudentresolutionnottolessentheinfluenceofhislearningandvirtue，bycasualfreaksofhumourandirregularstartsofill—managedmerriment。Hedidnotwishtoconfound，buttoinformhisauditors;andthoughhedidnotappeartosolicitbenevolence，healwayswishedtoretainauthority，andleavehiscompanyimpressedwiththeideathatitwashistoteachinthisworld，andtheirstolearn。Whatwonder，then，thatallshouldreceivewithdocilityfromJohnsonthosedoctrines，which，propagatedbyCollier，theydroveawayfromthemwithshouts！Dr。
