Physicallyhewaslittlesuitedtosuchanenterprise,forinappearancehewasslightandpale,andinconstitutiondelicate。Also,therewasanotherreasonagainstthething。HighChurchandsomewhatasceticinhisprinciples,inthebeginninghehadadmiredcelibacy,andinsecretdedicatedhimselftothatstate。ButatheartThomaswasverymuchaman,andoflatehehadcometoseethatwhichisagainstnatureispresumablynotright,thoughfanaticsmaynothesitatetopronounceitwrong。Possiblythisconversiontomoregenialviewsoflifewasquickenedbythepresenceintheneighbourhoodofayoungladywhomhechancedtoadmire;atleastitiscertainthatthemerethoughtofseeinghernomoreforeversmotehimlikeaswordofsuddenpain。 Twoyearshavegonebyallbutafewmonths,andfromtherectoryinaquietEnglishvillagewepasstoasceneinCentral,orSouthCentral,Africa。 Onthebrowofagrassyslopedottedoverwithmimosathorns,andclosetoagushingstreamofwater,standsahouse,orratherahut,builtofgreenbrickandthatchedwithgrass。Behindthishutisafenceofthorns,roughbutstrong,designedtoprotectallwithinitfromtheattacksoflionsandotherbeastsofprey。Atpresent,saveforasolitarymuleeatingitsprovenderbythewheelofatentedox—
