LittleLost——somehowthenameappealedtoBud,whoseinstinctforharmonyextendedtowordsandphrasesand,forthatmatter,toeverythingintheworldthatwasbeautiful。FromthetimewhenhefirstheardLittleLostmentioned,hehadfeltavagueregretthatchancehadnotledhimthereinsteadoftotheMuleshoe。Brandshehadheardallhislifeasthefamiliar,colloquialnamesforranchheadquarters。TheMuleshoewasmerelyabrandname。LittleLostwassomethingelse,andbecauseBuddyhadbeentaughtto\"waitandfindout\" andtoaskquestionsonlyasalastresort,BudwasstillinignoranceofthemeaningofLittleLost。Heknew,fromcarelessremarksmadeinhispresence,thatthemailcametoLittleLost,andthattherewassomesortofstorewherecertaineverydaynecessitieswerekept,forwhichthestore—keepercharged\"twoprices。\"Buttherewasalsoaranch,forhesometimesheardtheboysmentiontheLittleLostcattle,andspeakofsomemanasariderfortheLittleLost。 Thetrailwaseasy,hishorseswereasfataswasgoodforthem。IntwohoursofridingathisusualtrailpacehecameuponanotherstreamwhichheknewmustbeSunkCreekgrownalittlewideranddeeperinitsjourneydownthevalley。Hefordedthatwithagreatsplashing,climbedthefartherbank,followedastubby,rockybitofroadthatwoundthroughdensewillowandcottonwoodgrowth,cameoutintoahumpymeadowfullofanthills,gopherholesandsoggywetplaceswherethewatergrassgrew,crossedthatandfollowedtheroadaroundabrushyridgeandfoundhimselfsquarelyconfrontingLittleLost。 Therewereatleastfourcabinsandasomewhatpretentious,story—and—a—halfloghousewithvinesreachingvainlytothehighwindowsills,andcoarselacecurtains。Oneofthesecurtainsmovedslightly,andBud’ssharpeyesdetectedthemovementandknewthathisarrivalwasobservedinspiteoftheemptinessoftheyard。
