Ontheporchofthecourt—house,behindajuttingcornerpillarthatseemedespeciallydesignedfortheconcealmentofamaninBud’ssituation,herolledcigarettewhichhemeanttosmokelateronwhenthewaywasclear,andwaitedforthehorsementoappear。
Presentlytheycame,rodetoapointoppositethecourt—houseandbankwithnomorethanacarelessglancethatway,andhaltedinfrontofanuninvitinghotelacrossthestreet。Tworemainedontheirhorseswhilethethirdpoundedonthedoorandshookitbytheknobandfinallyraisedthelandlordfromhissleep。TherewasaconferencewhichBudwitnessedwithmuchinterest。Alamphadbeenlightedinthebareoffice,andagainsttheyellowglowBuddistinctlysawthelandlordnodhisheadtwice——whichplainlybetokenedsomesortofunderstanding。
