Thelittlegirls\"showedoff\"invariousways,andthelittleboys\"showedoff\"withsuchdiligencethattheairwasthickwithpaperwadsandthemurmurofscufflings。Andaboveitallthegreatmansatandbeamedamajesticjudicialsmileuponallthehouse,andwarmedhimselfinthesunofhisowngrandeur——forhewas\"showingoff,\"too。 TherewasonlyonethingwantingtomakeMr。Walters’ecstasycomplete,andthatwasachancetodeliveraBible—prizeandexhibitaprodigy。Severalpupilshadafewyellowtickets,butnonehadenough—— hehadbeenaroundamongthestarpupilsinquiring。Hewouldhavegivenworlds,now,tohavethatGermanladbackagainwithasoundmind。 TheprizewasdeliveredtoTomwithasmucheffusionasthesuperintendentcouldpumpupunderthecircumstances;butitlackedsomewhatofthetruegush,forthepoorfellow’sinstincttaughthimthattherewasamysteryherethatcouldnotwellbearthelight,perhaps;itwassimplypreposterousthatthisboyhadwarehousedtwothousandsheavesofScripturalwisdomonhispremises——adozenwouldstrainhiscapacity,withoutadoubt。
